The Supervisor of Inpatient Clinical Documentation Integrity is responsible for the daily supervision, workflow coordination, performance support, and competency development of assigned Clinical Documentation Integrity Specialist staff, including Pediatric CDIS team members. This role provides frontline oversight, coaching, mentoring, education, and operational support to ensure accurate, compliant, and high-quality clinical documentation practices.

The Supervisor develops, coordinates, and maintains the CDI training and preceptor program for new hires and supports ongoing staff competency through quality reviews, skills assessments, audit feedback, and individualized development plans. In collaboration with the CDI Manager, this position helps implement departmental priorities, supports performance management processes, and promotes consistent application of CDI policies, query standards, regulatory guidance, and Michigan Medicine expectations.

This position collaborates with CDI leadership, physicians, advanced practice providers, coding, quality, case management, revenue cycle, and administrative teams to support documentation accuracy, regulatory compliance, quality outcomes, and accurate representation of patient complexity and care.

Characteristics, Duties, & Responsibilities:

Staff Supervision and Performance Management:

• Provides direct supervision to assigned inpatient CDIS staff, including Pediatric Clinical Documentation Integrity Specialists. 
• Oversees daily workflow, productivity, prioritization, and staff assignments to ensure departmental goals are met. 
• Monitors staff performance related to documentation review quality, query compliance, productivity, accuracy, and professional communication. 
• Conducts ongoing competency assessments, chart reviews, and quality audits of CDIS work. 
• Provides timely, constructive feedback to staff regarding performance, documentation opportunities, query practices, and professional development. 
• Develops and implements individualized action plans to address performance gaps and support continued growth. 
• Supports and administers frontline performance management processes in collaboration with the CDI Manager, including goal setting, performance evaluations, coaching, documentation of performance concerns, and corrective action when appropriate. 
• Coaches, mentors, and empowers employees by providing the information, resources, and support needed to complete tasks effectively. 
• Promotes a positive, collaborative, and accountable team environment

Training, Precepting, and Staff Development:

• Ensures staff adherence to the Coding-CDI Query Policy, Query Escalation Policy, Standards of Practice, and departmental productivity and quality expectations.
• Monitors and supports CDIS proficiency in documentation review, query development, abstracting, and data entry in CDI systems and databases.
• Participates in the Michigan Medicine annual SMART goal/evaluation process and upholds Michigan Medicine core values.
• Continually expands CDI leadership, regulatory, quality, coding, clinical documentation, and performance management knowledge.
• Engages in department/unit activities, including staff meetings, in-services, workgroups, trial groups, and process improvement initiatives.
• Supports third-party audit denial and appeal processes by coordinating reviews, gathering supporting documentation, and escalating issues as appropriate.
• Performs other duties as needed to support departmental efficiency and operational effectiveness.

Education and Collaboration:

• Develops, coordinates, and maintains the training and preceptor program for all new CDI hires.
• Assigns and supports preceptors, monitors new hire progress, and ensures successful onboarding into CDI workflows and expectations.
• Creates and updates training materials, orientation plans, competency tools, and educational resources for CDIS staff.
• Assesses new hire readiness and ongoing staff competency through observation, case reviews, skills assessments, and feedback from preceptors.
• Identifies individual and team education needs based on audit findings, regulatory updates, workflow changes, and performance trends.
• Provides ongoing education to ensure CDIS staff remain current with clinical documentation standards, coding guidelines, payer requirements, quality measures, and regulatory expectations.
• Ensures training and competency materials align with CDI department standards, coding guidance, regulatory expectations, and CDI leadership direction.

• Bachelors degree in Health Information Management, Nursing, healthcare administration, or a related healthcare field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. 
• Current healthcare licensure or credential such as RHIT, RHIA, RN, NP, PA, MD/DO, CCS, CCDS, CDIP, or other relevant credential. 
• Three to five years of CDI experience, inpatient coding experience, clinical documentation experience, or related experience working with coded data and clinical documentation. 
• Minimum of two years of experience as a Clinical Documentation Integrity Specialist, preferably at Michigan Medicine. 
• Current CCDS or CDIP credential, or ability to obtain within a defined timeframe if appropriate. 
• Demonstrated proficiency in CDI productivity, query compliance, documentation review quality, communication, and leadership behaviors. 
• Knowledge of inpatient coding concepts, clinical validation, quality measures, severity of illness/risk of mortality, Vizient risk data, and AHRQ quality measures. 
• Ability to comply with Michigan Medicine remote work expectations and applicable policies.
