Position Summary:

The Student Conduct Investigator plays a critical role in maintaining a safe, respectful, and inclusive learning environment by ensuring that student behavior aligns with institutional policies and codes of conduct. This position involves investigating alleged violations of university or school policies, gathering and analyzing evidence, interviewing parties involved, and preparing detailed reports. The investigator works collaboratively with administrators, faculty, and legal representatives to promote fairness and accountability throughout the conduct process.
 

Complaint/Report Intake and Investigation (40%)

• Intake: Facilitate investigative intake with relevant parties. At times, co-facilitate with partner units, such as Equity, Civil Rights and Title IX (ECRT).
• Case Management: Receive and manage reports of alleged policy violations, ensuring timely and thorough resolution.
• Individual Conduct Investigation: Conduct impartial and comprehensive investigations, including interviewing complainants, respondents, and witnesses; collecting and evaluating relevant documentation or evidence. Gather information and prepare files and reports to be used in the student conduct process and related hearings; keep up-to-date meeting notes, spreadsheets, and database entries related to conduct cases; generate case progress updates; and assist in assessment and reporting of cases that require investigations.
• Organizational Investigations: Lead investigations into alleged organizational misconduct, including hazing, by student organizations, including teams, clubs, fraternities, and sororities. Interview group representatives and coordinate efforts with relevant University and Student Life departments (e.g., FSL, CCI, Michigan Recreation, Athletics) to ensure compliance with the Stop Campus Hazing Act.
• Resolutions: Present investigative findings in conduct meetings, and facilitate the creation of outcomes for agreements when appropriate. Serve as representative of the University in hearings, presenting findings from the investigation.  
• Policy Compliance: Ensure all processes comply with institutional policies and applicable laws such as FERPA, Title VI and Title IX, as relevant. Work with the unit Director and/or Associate Director to interpret applicable University policies.
• Collaboration: Partner with the Department of Public Safety and Security, The Office of the General Counsel, and other relevant university administrative staff to address matters effectively and equitably.
• Education and Outreach: Support educational initiatives that promote understanding of student policies and the full range of resolution pathways.

Process Administration (30%):

• Documentation and Reporting: Prepare thorough and accurate investigation reports that summarize key findings, supporting evidence, and recommended or implemented resolutions.
• Case Management: Manage an individual caseload involving on- and off-campus incidents that may impact a student's standing under the Statement of Student Rights and Responsibilities, university policies, or safety and well-being. Oversee all aspects of case processing, including documentation, evidence review, and sanction/action planning. Generate reports on case progress, types of violations, sanction completion, and emerging trends.
• Case Coordination & Collaboration: Work closely with colleagues across departments, external partners, and academic or campus leaders to support shared student conduct goals. Coordinate sanctions and action plans for individual cases as needed.
• Research and Policy Awareness: Conduct regular research and stay current on university policies, the student code of conduct, applicable laws and ordinances, and best practices in student conduct administration.

Divisional Work, Committee Work and Professional Advancement (20%):

• Remain current in the field of student conduct investigations through participating in listservs, conferences and training, partnerships with campus colleagues, reviewing current literature and research, and participating in local, regional or national professional associations and organizations.
• Assist the Associate Director with outreach and education on student life topics related to student rights, hazing, free speech, discrimination and harassment, alcohol and other drugs, and other behavioral trends with campus partners; assist with related projects as assigned including the promotion of student learning and development through case management and related educational efforts while utilizing specialized knowledge of higher education administration, student development theory, conflict resolution, restorative justice, the First Amendment, Title VI, Title IX, VAWA, current legal mandates, and other related content, law, and policy areas.
• Advance the mission, goals, and educational outcomes of OSA and Student Life.
• Contribute to an inclusive and equitable environment for all students and colleagues.
• Represent OSA on committees, task forces, and institutional initiatives as needed.

Related Duties as Assigned (10%):

• Other responsibilities as assigned by the OSA Associate Director, Director of Student Resolution Resources, and/or Student Life leadership.
• Work on evenings and weekends required on occasion.
   

• Education: Bachelor's degree required; advanced degree in higher education, law, criminal justice, or a related field preferred.
• Experience: Experience in conducting thorough investigations, facilitating conflict resolution processes, or student affairs. Familiarity with federal regulations guiding student conduct work.
• Skills: Strong analytical, interpersonal, and communication skills; ability to handle sensitive issues with discretion and neutrality.
• Competencies: Knowledge of investigative techniques, report writing, and compliance with legal and ethical standards in student conduct cases. Ability to exercise sound judgment, decision-making, and discretion while remaining neutral in an investigation.
• Technology: Familiar with relevant case management software.
