The University of Michigan (U-M) seeks a dynamic and collaborative leader with a student-centered and community engagement mindset to lead its Office of Academic Multicultural Initiatives (OAMI). The director of OAMI, reporting to the Vice Provost for Access & Opportunity, plays a critical role in the University's continued efforts to provide an academic and culturally diverse community, promote academic success and belonging, and encourage student engagement in multicultural leadership and education. The Office's focus areas include co-curricular programming for undergraduate students, student support, and management of multicultural events.

OAMI develops and delivers a broad portfolio of programs and initiatives that serve students, the university, and the broader community. Signature university-wide events include the annual Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Symposium and the annual Dance for Mother Earth Powwow. The unit also provides student-centered programs and services, including SuccessConnects, M-Connect, M-STEP, M-CLIC, First Generation Gateway, support services for undocumented and DACAmented students of all ethnicities and nationalities, Student Academic Multicultural Initiatives, and eight annual student celebrations.

Strategic partnerships across the university are central to OAMI's work, enabling the unit to expand its reach, enhance student support, and maximize institutional and community impact. In addition, OAMI works to coordinate and strengthen students' access to resources and opportunities by collaborating with student organizations, U-M faculty and staff, and external partners, including the State of Michigan.

• Provide strategic oversight of OAMI's broad portfolio of student programs and services, annual student celebrations, and signature university-wide initiatives, including the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Symposium and the Dance for Mother Earth Powwow.
• Set OAMI's vision, priorities, and goals, translating them into clear plans, resource decisions, and measurable outcomes.
• Lead and develop a senior team of 10 permanent staff, including associate and assistant directors, plus more than 60 student employees, strengthening team cohesion, accountability, and leadership capacity across the organization.
• Build strategic partnerships with student organizations, faculty and staff, and external partners, including the State of Michigan.
• Use student input, program data, and emerging trends to set priorities, evaluate impact, and improve programs and services.
• Oversee OAMI's budget, staffing, and resource allocation, and partner with University Development to cultivate donors and pursue grants that sustain and expand the office's work.

• Bachelor's degree or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
• 8+ years of experience managing student-focused academic programs, including strategic planning, partnership development, and student success components. 
• 3+ years of experience leading and managing a team.
• Demonstrated experience in fiscal management, including grants and funding development.
• Expert proficiency in developing, designing, and managing large-scale events.
• Demonstrated proficiency in working across a complex organization and with a wide range of people from a variety of backgrounds and cultures.
• Expertise in contemporary issues affecting student success and a demonstrated commitment to advancing educational equity and opportunity, particularly for historically marginalized students.
