The SWAT Supervisor provides operational, clinical, and administrative leadership for the Specialized Workforce for Acute Transport (SWAT) program. Reporting to the Clinical Nurse Director, the Supervisor partners with the SWAT Medical Director and interdisciplinary leaders to oversee the delivery of safe, high-quality, patient-centered care across multiple hospitals and clinical environments.

This position is responsible for supporting 24/7 SWAT operations, including critical care transport, moderate sedation services, MOVE response, and other specialized clinical services. The Supervisor provides leadership for staffing, quality and safety initiatives, regulatory compliance, workforce development, operational efficiency, and strategic program growth while promoting a culture of collaboration, accountability, innovation, and continuous improvement.

Leadership & Personnel Management

• Provide day-to-day operational leadership for SWAT clinical operations.

• Supervise, coach, mentor, and develop SWAT nurses and paramedics. 

• Participate in recruitment, interviewing, hiring, onboarding, orientation, retention, and succession planning.

• Conduct performance evaluations and support employee engagement and professional development.

• Foster a positive, collaborative, and accountable work environment.

Clinical Operations

• Coordinate daily staffing and resource allocation to meet patient care needs.

• Provide clinical support and direct patient care as operational needs require.

• Support 24/7 transport operations, moderate sedation services, MOVE response, and emerging clinical initiatives.

• Collaborate with physicians, nursing leaders, ancillary departments, and operational partners to ensure efficient patient flow and exceptional patient care.

Quality, Safety & Regulatory Compliance

• Lead quality improvement initiatives that improve patient outcomes and operational performance.

• Monitor clinical quality metrics, patient safety indicators, and operational dashboards.

• Ensure compliance with Michigan Medicine policies, accreditation standards, and regulatory requirements.

• Participate in adverse event reviews, root cause analyses, and process improvement initiatives.

• Promote evidence-based practice and a culture of continuous quality improvement.

Operational Management

• Assist in developing departmental goals, strategic initiatives, policies, and standard operating procedures.

• Support budgeting, payroll oversight, scheduling, and resource management.

• Schedule and assign clinical staff and arrange coverage as needed.

• Identify opportunities to improve workflow, patient throughput, and resource utilization.

Education & Professional Development

• Collaborate with clinical educators to ensure staff competency and ongoing professional development.

• Support leadership development, specialty certification, and evidence-based practice initiatives.

• Serve as a clinical mentor and leadership resource for staff.

Collaboration & Strategic Initiatives

• Represent SWAT on multidisciplinary committees and organizational workgroups.

• Participate in Unit-Based Governance and shared decision-making initiatives.

• Partner with hospital leadership to support new programs, service expansion, and organizational priorities.

• Assist in planning and implementing strategic initiatives that advance the SWAT program.

Educational Requirement:
Applicant must meet ONE of the following:
*Bachelor's degree in Nursing OR
*Associates degree or diploma in Nursing and Master's degree in Nursing

Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Michigan.

Minimum five (5) years experience as a Registered Nurse.

Minimum of five (5) years of critical care, emergency, transport, or comparable acute care nursing experience in a tertiary care setting.

Nurse Leadership certification or completion of a nursing leadership certification within two (2) years of accepting this position.  Certification is expected to be maintained while in this leadership role. Examples include Certified Nurse Manager and Leader (CNML) or, Nurse Executive (NE-BC).  The nursing leadership certification must be recognized by the Magnet Recognition Program and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), for the list, visit here.

• Master?s degree in Nursing or related field.

• Previous supervisory or management experience.

• Experience in critical care transport or procedural sedation programs.

• Current ACLS, PALS, NRP, and CCRN certifications.

• Experience with quality improvement, Lean methodology, operational dashboards, and performance metrics.

• Experience with budgeting, workforce planning, and regulatory compliance.

• Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and healthcare information systems.

• Demonstrated leadership experience in charge nurse, team leader, supervisory, or similar leadership role.

• Current practice demonstrating advanced clinical judgment, critical thinking, and operational decision-making.

• Excellent interpersonal, communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.

• Ability to collaborate effectively across multidisciplinary teams.

• Full-time (40 hours/week)

• Schedule flexibility required to support a 24/7 clinical operation.

• Participation in rotating on-call responsibilities.

• Occasional weekend, holiday, and off-shift coverage as operational needs require.
