Job Summary

 

Custodial and Grounds Services is seeking an Irrigation Mechanic II to join our team. Serving the U-M community, Custodial & Grounds Services are the stewards of the buildings and grounds that make the Ann Arbor campus of the University of Michigan unique. Our employees are dedicated to the preservation of the academic and hospital campuses and pride themselves in giving exceptional customer service while conserving, enhancing and maintaining more than 26 million square feet of property.

As stewards for the outdoor properties of the U-M?s Ann Arbor Campus, Grounds Services provides horticultural and grounds keeping maintenance. Our specialized crews are dedicated professionals who pride themselves in caring for the university's natural areas.

Responsibilities*

 
  • Maintain all components of Campus irrigation systems including the installation, repair or replacement of pumps, motors, valves, flow meters, water lines, irrigation heads, controllers, switches, radios, antennas, repeaters, relays and wiring.

     

  • Disassemble pumps and replace defective parts such as bearings, shafts, valves, and gears and reassemble.

     

  • Operate equipment used to install irrigation systems including trenchers, pipe pullers, augers and shovels. 

     

  • Read and interpret blueprints, diagrams, sketches, and job specifications.

     

  • Locate and mark underground irrigation wiring for the Miss Digg system.

     

  • Remove snow using various trucks, front end loaders, tractor equipment and hand tools.

     

  • Coordinate the work of assigned assistants.

     

  • Build, assemble or anchor caging, shelving and campus site furniture and other general maintenance related duties.

     

  • Ability to perform all duties within the classification, with or without a reasonable accommodation, including constantly positions self to install and service all components of the underground irrigation systems, traverses uneven terrain in and around the underground irrigation systems, constantly works in outdoor weather conditions, moves about inside mechanical rooms in and around immovable objects to service irrigation equipment, ascends and descends ladder to service overhead pipes in mechanical rooms, and transports irrigation materials up to 50 lbs from vehicle to the servicing site.

Required Qualifications*

 
  • Must have and maintain a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class B with Air Brake endorsement and no restrictions
  • Ability to obtain upon employment and maintain a Department of Transportation (DOT) medical card
  • Must have and maintain a valid driver's license with no more than 7 points
  • Reasonable knowledge of the principles and practical applications of irrigation systems

Desired Qualifications*

 
  • Minimum two (2) years irrigation maintenance experience

  • A working knowledge of Maxicom Central Control irrigation system
