The primary responsibility of the EHS Tech II position is to certify and maintain various engineering controls in laboratory and clinical environments.  Controls include Biological Safety Cabinets (BSC) and various Local Exhaust Ventilation (LEV) like fume hoods, paint booths and point exhaust.  Additional responsibilities include developing, maintaining, and upgrading occupational health and safety related programs to ensure regulatory and quality compliance.  Perform routine surveys, audits, inventories, testing, monitoring, and sample collection. This position may be filled at a lower technical job description (EHS Tech I).

• Measure and certify the performance of various engineering controls including Biological Safety Cabinets (BSC), fume hoods, paint booths and point exhausts.
• Perform diagnostics, maintenance, decontaminations, and repairs of BSC.
• Perform EHS equipment calibrations and maintenance.
• Inspect, certify, repair, calibrate and maintain records of technical equipment and components.
• Provide technical support and safety-related advice to faculty, staff and students.   
• Summarize and record technical data.
• Participate in data collection, database maintenance, and report generation.   
• Assist U-M facilities management in maintaining compliance with applicable regulations.
• Perform routine deliveries, transfers and shipments of materials on campus.
• Maintain inventories of departmental technical supplies.
• Conduct quality assurance audits and prepare inspection reports and maintain records.
• Participate in emergency response activities.
• Comply with all occupational health, safety, and environmental rules and regulations, and University policies and guidelines.

• A high school diploma is necessary.
• Must have a valid driver's license.
• Must be able to pass a physical examination to allow for emergency response and wearing of personal protective equipment (PPE) and have no lifting or breathing restrictions. 
• Demonstrated aptitude to diagnose mechanical and electrical systems and identify problems.
• Ability to use various electronic and mechanical devices and tools.
• Ability to work in laboratory, clinical, and industrial environments.
• Ability to communicate effectively with all levels of the organization.
• Awareness of occupational health, safety, and environmental rules/regulations.
• Experience using a computer and tablet for basic functions like email, scheduling, and reports. 
• Must be able to perform all duties within the classification, with or without a reasonable accommodation. The EHS Tech II regularly positions self to inspect, repair, and test equipment, perform audits, inventories, and sample collection over and under obstacles, in and around immoveable objects, and inside equipment. The EHS Tech II frequently ascends/descends ladders, uses various mechanical devices and small tools, and occasionally moves equipment weighing up to 40 pounds.

• Experience testing and certifying fume hoods, LEV and BSC.
• Supplemental course work in biology, chemistry, mechanical design, or vocational programs.
• Experience in the operation and maintenance of safety-related or analytical equipment.
• Experience using Microsoft Access databases.
