The Michigan Public Health - Substance Use Policy and Economic Research (M-SUPER) Network at the University of Michigan School of Public Health is seeking an independent and motivated full-time statistician at the senior level. This is a three (3)-year term-limited appointment with the possibility of renewal contingent upon performance and funding. The ideal candidate for this position will collaborate closely with faculty investigators and research staff to construct analytic cohorts, develop claims-based measures, conduct statistical analyses, and contribute to manuscripts, reports, and grant applications.

The M-SUPER Network is an interdisciplinary, interinstitutional consortium of faculty, investigators, and trainees. It is led by Dr. Thuy Nguyen who serves as the director of the M-SUPER Network and Associate Professor of Health Management and Policy at the University of Michigan School of Public Health. The Network members employ rigorous quantitative approaches and leverages access to multiple large databases to address pressing substance use policy knowledge gaps. 

Under general direction, the statistician will construct analytic cohorts in large health insurance claims databases; operate claims-based measures; analyze and interpret a wide variety of data according to established statistical methods; and prepare reports and tables summarizing results of analyses. This position requires an individual who can work with a high degree of independence within the scope of their responsibilities. The individual will be expected to analyze, compare, and evaluate different courses of action to solve complex analytic and programming problems without immediate supervision. Responsibilities include:

• Reshaping and combining large, complex data files to construct analytic cohorts and provide analytic datasets (40%)
• Conducting advanced statistical analyses, such as regression modeling, multiple imputation, multilevel modeling, and survey analysis (30%)
• Contributing intellectually to the design, implementation, programming, analysis, reporting, documentation, and dissemination of research projects as a co-author (15%)
• Working closely with the M-SUPER team to develop grant proposals, including contributing to the framework of the study aims, designing and authoring the methodological approach, and performing power and sample size calculations (15%)

Minimum requirements for Senior

• Master's degree in Statistics, Biostatistics, Epidemiology, Health Services Research, Economics, Data Science, Public Health, or a related quantitative field
• Minimum of 3 years of relevant experience conducting quantitative research and statistical analysis
• Minimum of 1 year of experience analyzing large administrative claims databases, such as Medicare, Medicaid, or commercial claims
• Demonstrated ability to independently manage complex data and analytic projects
• Advanced proficiency in SQL and statistical programming languages such as R, SAS, Stata, or Python to manage and analyze large datasets
• Demonstrated record of scholarly productivity, including contributions to peer-reviewed publications, technical reports, or externally funded research
• Excellent professional, verbal and written communication skills

Candidates who do not meet the full qualifications for the Senior level may be considered for appointment as a Statistician Intermediate. Minimum requirements for Intermediate 

• Bachelor's degree in Statistics, Biostatistics, Epidemiology, Health Services Research, Economics, Data Science, Public Health, or a related quantitative field
• Minimum of 1 years of relevant experience conducting quantitative research and statistical analysis
• Experience analyzing large administrative claims databases, such as Medicare, Medicaid, or commercial claims
• Demonstrated ability to independently manage complex data and analytic projects
• Proficiency in SQL and statistical programming languages such as R, SAS, Stata, or Python to manage and analyze large datasets
• Strong professional, verbal and written communication skills

This position allows for a hybrid work schedule. The selected candidate will be expected to work on-site 2-3 days per week at the offices in the NCRC building based on business needs. After the initial training period and assessment, this may be reduced.

This position may be filled at the senior or intermediate level, depending on qualifications. Applicants who do not meet all qualifications for the senior classification but demonstrate strong potential and relevant experience will be considered for appointment at the Statistician Intermediate level.

The selected candidate must have legal authorization to work in the United States.
