The University Center for Language and Literacy (UCLL), an outpatient language and literacy services clinic at U-M, within The Mary A. Rackham Institute (MARI), is hiring a Speech-Language Pathologist.

Who We Serve

MARI is a revenue-generating auxiliary comprised of three specialized units: the University Center for Language and Literacy, the Psychological Clinic, and the University Center for the Child and Family. Serving children, adolescents, adults, and families, we provide compassionate and evidence-based care for U-M faculty, staff, students, their families, and the broader Michigan community. Established almost 90 years ago, MARI remains one of the few clinical providers administered through U-M central campus (i.e., we are not part of Michigan Medicine), providing both language and literacy and mental health services. MARI reports directly to the Dean of the Rackham Graduate School.

UCLL provides language and literacy services to individuals with a variety of communication needs across the lifespan. UCLL is particularly well known for the University of Michigan Aphasia Program (UMAP). Adults with language disorders resulting from stroke, brain injury, or other neurological conditions come from around the globe to receive the highly individualized and intensive speech and language therapy offered at UMAP. UCLL also offers specialized programs for children's language and literacy development.

We are seeking a Speech-Language Pathologist with specific experience evaluating and treating adults with aphasia and apraxia with multiple evidence-based treatment approaches. Experience using the Life Participation Approach to Aphasia is imperative, as well as collaborating with a team. The candidate should be comfortable working with and educating care partners as well as generating detailed home programming recommendations. This position may also include assessment and treatment of school-aged clients with literacy challenges. 

• Diagnostic and therapeutic intervention for adults with aphasia and apraxia and/or children with language/literacy disorders 
• Prepare and disseminate meaningful clinical speech and language reports 
• Participate in client staffings with fellow SLPs 
• Assist in research programs 
• Supervise student interns and clinical fellows 
• Provide ongoing education and counseling to clients and families 
• Consultation with families, schools, or other professionals
• Participate in professional development activities

• Master's Degree in speech-language pathology with ASHA Certificate of Clinical Competence 
• SLP license in the state of Michigan
• Experience treating clients across the lifespan with aphasia and apraxia, both individually and in groups, and children with language/literacy disorders, particularly reading disorders
• Proficient with technology for teletherapy, using tools and strategies to support persons with aphasia and children with literacy challenges, as well as experience with Electronic Health Records
• Excellent oral communication, proficient organizational, time management, and writing skills
• Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work in a team SLP environment 
• Experience and/or willingness to supervise student interns and clinical fellows

This position will be 80 - 100% onsite, with remote work options available depending on clinical need. Hours are typically 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. Monday through Friday; flex hours may be required to accommodate early evening appointments for reading intervention clients.
