Responsibilities*

 
  • As a member of the team, the APP will be expected to evaluate and treat neurosurgery patients independently with faculty available for guidance, as well as assist neurosurgeons in the diagnosis and treatment of pediatric patients. 
  • Preoperative teaching, preoperative and postoperative care in the outpatient setting. 
  • Obtain detailed history; perform physical examinations and present pertinent information/data to the medical staff. 
  • Perform detailed neurologic examination. 
  • Formulate treatment plan, order appropriate radiographic, labs, and/or diagnostic studies. 
  • Collect and interpret diagnostic and laboratory tests: radiographic procedures, and clinical studies. 
  • Place referrals to various internal and external services/facilities. 
  • Evaluate, screen, and counsel patients on health maintenance and promote utilization of community resources. 
  • See new, return, and postoperative patients and manage routine and moderately complex conditions
  • Support protocol driven follow up
  • Evaluate and initiate care for time sensitive but non-operative conditions, and see urgent referrals
  • Provide routine neurosurgical services effectively and efficiently. 
  • Provide consult services for inpatient, and emergency room patients when 
  • Provide independent and collaborative outpatient evaluation and management within designated specialty clinics
  • Manage electronic health record messages, patient calls, result review, documentation, and care coordination tasks
  • Provide clinical leadership in practice, staff development, and research. 
  • Participate in student, trainee, and staff education. 
  • Participate in ongoing quality improvement initiatives. 
  • Provide clinical leadership in practice, staff development, and research. 
     

Required Qualifications*

 

PA Required Qualifications

  • Satisfactory completion of a Physician Assistant program accredited by Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant  (ARC-PA) or one of its predecessor agencies, CAHEA or CAAHEP.
  • Certification by the National Commission on Certification for Physician Assistants (NCCPA).
  • Current license to practice as a Physician Assistant in the State of Michigan.
  • State of Michigan Controlled Substance License Required  
  • Current DEA registration required
  • AHA approved BLS also required unless PALS was completed through the UMHS Simulation Center  
  • PALS
  • Two years of experience working in pediatric neurosurgery as an Advanced Practice Professional

NP Required Qualifications

  • Current licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse and Nurse Practitioner specialty certification in the State of Michigan.
  • Current specialty certification to practice as an Acute Care Pediatric Nurse Practitioner 
  • Graduate of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program.
  • Certification as a Nurse Practitioner recognized by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN).
  • Current DEA registration required
  • AHA approved BLS also required unless PALS was completed through the UMHS Simulation Center  
  • PALS
  • Two years of experience working in pediatric neurosurgery as an Advanced Practice Professional

Desired Qualifications*

 
  • Four (4) or more years of pediatric or neurosurgery APP experience 
  • Experience with pediatric patient care. 
  • Experience in evaluation and care of preoperative and postoperative neurosurgical patients 
  • Excellent patient service, written and verbal communication skills 
  • Ability to evaluate and care for preoperative and postoperative pediatric neurosurgical patients. 
  • Excellent interpersonal skills while working with parents/caregivers with new neurosurgical diagnosis/stressful situations. 
  • The ability to work with minimal supervision and as part of a collaborative team on the Neurosurgical Service and with other Neurosurgical advanced practice providers.
