Job Summary

 

The Department of Mathematics, College of Literature, Science and the Arts, is seeking an experienced professional to work as part of a team in the department's student services area, focusing on student professional services for our undergraduate and graduate students. Specifically, we seek an individual who will work with the program directors to provide employment opportunities for our students and to provide overall professional services. The person in this position represents the school and its mission to many audiences and must perform responsibly and professionally and exercise excellent judgment in dealing with the many internal and external constituencies. Responsibilities*

 

10% - Program Vision & Guidance

Provide strategic vision and guidance to faculty administration regarding career outcomes, student professional development,and placement success for the following programs:

  • Applied & Interdisciplinary Mathematics PhD & MS
  • Mathematics PhD & MS
  • Actuarial Mathematics MS & AMDP
  • Quantitative Finance & Risk Management MS & AMDP
  • Mathematics Undergraduate Majors

20% - Employer Relations and Professional Networking

  • Build professional network connections by nurturing strategic relationships with organizations that hire mathematics graduates for jobs in industry
  • Provide networking resources and advice to mathematics students searching for higher education or job opportunities in academia
  • Be the outward face of the Mathematics programs for employer and corporate relationships
  • Broker employment, internship, and training arrangements
  • Oversee the establishment of new job recruiting pipelines that lead directly to employment opportunities for students.
  • Form relationships/connections with our graduate and undergraduate program alumni; bring in alumni for department-hosted career events for our current students

50 % - Student Career Advising and Professional Development

  • Coordinate, monitor, and manage all aspects of the student experience with career services
  • Advise students on job and internship search process
  • Develop and deliver workshops and programs on professional skills development and career readiness for current students
  • Work with students on resume writing, interviewing techniques, and skills, and support international students in navigating US hiring practices

20% - Career Placement

  • Track, analyze, and report career outcomes and placement data to support departmental planning
  • Coordinate departmental career fair and employer recruiting events
  • Partner with the University Career Center and other colleges/ departments to provide career resources and opportunities

Required Qualifications*

 
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent and at least three years of related experience in academic and/or career advising and job placement
  • Demonstrated experience and skills in multitasking, initiative in creative problem-solving, and adaptability
  • Proven ability to network and form productive professional relationships
  • Demonstrated strong communication skills, including verbal, written, and listening skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to relate well to others
  • Desire to work in an office that places a high value on quality customer service, team orientation, and intentional planning
  • Ability to achieve results while contributing to the larger team
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively as a critical member of the team
  • Demonstrated ability to work with diverse populations
  • Proven ability to handle detailed and confidential information in an accurate and timely manner
  • Professional demeanor and presentation required
  • Demonstrated ability to plan strategically
  • Event and program planning experience

Desired Qualifications*

 
  • Master's degree in related field
  • Experience using career services platforms, CRM systems, and career outcome analytics tools (e.g.,Handshake, Symplicity, 12twenty, Salesforce, etc.)
  • Knowledge of and experience working in a career services office
  • Knowledge of norms, trends, and stakeholders in mathematics, both in academics and industry
  • Extensive experience working with international students
  • Knowledge and experience in career advising
  • Knowledge of and experience working with employers and recruiting services and systems
  • Experience of data-informed decision making, employer engagement strategy, alumni relations, workforce trends for STEM fields
  • Knowledge of and experience with web-based surveys
  • Knowledge of and experience using various online marketing tools such as Constant Contact
  • Knowledge of University of Michigan policies
