A Research Lab Technician Senior position is available in the laboratory of Dr. Akira Ono, in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at the University of Michigan Medical School, Ann Arbor, MI. The Ono laboratory explores the molecular and cellular mechanisms facilitating infectious virus particles of HIV-1 and influenza A virus using biochemical, molecular biological, and cell biological approaches. This position is primarily for the work that contributes to the ongoing HIV projects.

Please note: This position is term-limited for 11 months, with the possibility of renewal based on successful renewal of the NIH grant funding. 

• Carry out ordering, monitoring and maintenance of laboratory safety (including chemical and biological safety), laboratory record keeping, and routine lab organization and maintenance (common reagents and instruments).
• Assist in and carry out research projects in a HIV biology lab studying virus-cell interaction using approaches in virology, biochemistry, molecular biology, and cell biology.  
• Consult primary literature, design and execute experiments, evaluate and communicate the results.  
• Experimental procedures to be performed include (but are not limited to): virology procedures including assays for detecting virus particles and monitoring virus replication; various immunological procedures including ELISA, flow cytometry, Western blotting and immunoprecipitation; molecular biology procedures including DNA cloning, PCR, and plasmid prep; mammalian cell cultures including virus-infected cell cultures. 
• The individual will participate in lab meetings related to the progress of the project(s)
   

• Bachelor degree in Molecular Biology, Microbiology, or Biochemistry or equivalent experience. 
• 1-2 years of experience in a related field.
• An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted, including relevant undergraduate and graduate student experience.
• Thorough knowledge of molecular biology, cell biology, and biochemistry and research experiences in virology laboratories are required. 
• Laboratory experiences with virology, molecular biology, and biochemistry techniques are required.
• Required skills: virological assays (plaque assays, viral genome detection, CPE), molecular biology techniques (DNA and RNA), purification and functional analyses of recombinant proteins, preparation of laboratory media and solutions, and mammalian tissue culture, in particular, primary T cell and PBMC isolation and analyses of phenotypes.

• MS in Molecular Biology, Microbiology, or Biochemistry or equivalent experience.
• The candidate is expected to have strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills; be willing to acquire new skills; and develop new technical approaches.
