Who We Are

 

The Department of Cariology, Restorative Sciences & Endodontics (CRSE) takes on a large responsibility for DDS training. Within the department, there is a wide range of specialty and research foci. CRSE dental teaching activities include cariology, general dentistry, computerized dentistry, endodontics, dental public health, geriatric and special care dentistry, and applied biomaterials. 

Graduate activities include 3 year Master's Degree programs in the field of Restorative Dentistry or Endodontics. CRSE also offers a post-graduate program in Restorative Dentistry, Regenerative Dentistry or Endodontics. The CRSE research activities include educational research, computerized dentistry research, clinical research, molecular biology, cancer biology, health disparities research, hard tissue research, pulp biology, and novel biomaterials.  

The Business Administrator reports directly to the Chair for the CRSE department. As the lead, you will be expected to effectively communicate with and manage the expectations of all stakeholders.

Responsibilities*

 

Manage and direct the administrative, financial, and operational activities for clinics, research, and teaching missions of the Department of Cariology, Restorative Science, and Endodontics for the School of Dentistry. Work collaboratively and under the direction of the Department Chair with administrative oversight of all the academic unit functions. The role includes the following essential functions:

Operational Management 40% 
Manage and direct the administrative, financial, and operational activities for clinics, research, and teaching missions of the Department of CRSE for the School of Dentistry.  Work collaboratively and under the direction of the Department Chair with administrative oversight of all the academic unit functions. Provide leadership for operational changes, clinical changes, scheduling changes, and strategic plans. Identify areas requiring improvement and/or enhancements; recommend, develop, and implement changes to appropriate processes or systems; ensure that the established procedures are carried out efficiently.  

Initiate, develop, and implement policies, procedures, and controls for administrative functions.   

Represent the department on business affairs to internal and external stakeholders. Network and develop strong relationships with other units to foster collaboration and implement best practices.  

Fiscal Management 30% 
Assess the budget implications of new initiatives and advise on the impact of resource allocation decisions and commitments. Develop and prepare annual and long term revenue and expense budgets, projections, and financial reports for all funds; monitor budget to actual performance. Develop and establish financial and operational systems to monitor, control, and verify expenditures and carry out financial analyses for the department; Monitor patient billing and collection activities; review and approve all statements of activity, payroll, human resources, and invoices. Monitor the preparation and activity of grants and contracts and ensure compliance with institution funding sources and federal guidelines and regulations. Coordinates with the School's finance office on all budgeting, financial reporting, and procurement needs.   

Manage grant and contract proposals involving a variety of funding sources, ensure support services, and compliance with institution funding sources and federal guidelines and regulations.  

HR and Operational Support 30% 
Responsible for providing leadership and professional expertise or services through leveraging the knowledge and skills of others. Meets with Human Resources to prioritize employee relations and identify opportunities for development, succession planning, and strategic growth for the department. Coordinate the faculty recruitment process and manage the academic appointment/reappointment process and credentialing.   

Assure compliance with the school of dentistry policies, guidelines, and systems, including Axium, Ctools, and MiTools. Oversee human resource functions to support the clinics, research, and teaching mission; lead human resource activities, including but not limited to performance appraisals, professional development, job descriptions, selection and assignment of staff, and reporting relations.

Manage facility operations' coordination, direction, and policy development, including space allocation and renovations. Represent the department on various committees. Assure compliance with the school of dentistry policies, guidelines, and systems. Special Projects/Assignments/Service as needed.
 

Required Qualifications*

 

Lead level: Bachelor's degree in business, accounting, or a related field and 5 to 7 years experience in an administrative/supervisory capacity, including recruitment and development of team members

Senior Level: Bachelor's degree in business, accounting, or a related field and 3 to 5 years experience in an administrative/supervisory capacity, including recruitment and development of team members
 

These requirements apply to both levels:

  • Excellent analytical, problem solving and decision making skills. Ability to collaborate with multiple stakeholders and viewpoints to develop creative solutions to problems
  • Excellent interpersonal and communications skills including written, verbal and presentation skills, diplomacy and discretion 
  • Experience with budgets, accounting, and long and short term business planning 
  • Excellent business relationship management skills and ability to resolve issues with diplomacy and tact while building positive relationships at multiple levels and with diverse groups internal and external to the school. 
  • Strong financial management skills in budgeting and expense reporting 
  • Strong experience developing highly interactive and collaborative team environments 
  • Must be detail oriented and possess strong time management skills

  • Master's degree (both levels)  
  • Degree in Health/Dental related field  
  • Knowledge of UM policies and procedures or policy & procedures in a clinical or higher educational environment

Underfill Statement

 

This position may be underfilled at a lower classification depending on the qualifications of the selected candidate. The underfill is for the Business Administrator Senior level with a salary range of $110-$118K .
