Job Summary

 

The Electronics Tech Supervisor will supervise and coordinate the planning, fabrication, and construction of experimental and scientific equipment while collaborating with faculty, engineers, and technical staff to determine design requirements and evaluate system performance. The selected candidate will oversee the development of work instructions in partnership with Cognizant Engineers and provide guidance and training to technicians on the operation and maintenance of instruments and equipment. Responsible for supervising two or more full-time equivalent Fabrication Team employees, including interviewing, hiring recommendations, training, scheduling, performance management,disciplinary actions, and employee development.

Responsibilities*

 
  • Provides direction and coordination in planning and construction of experimental and scientific equipment.
  • Consult with faculty and engineers, evaluate system performance of new equipment, instruct technicians in proper operation and maintenance of equipment, and perform these duties on the high standard of instrumentation required to support NASA space missions.
  • Develop work plans, cost amounts, proposal and project documentation, and interact directly with client personnel involved in the fabrication of spaceflight hardware.
  • Collaborate with outside vendors providing similar or complimentary services to help balance internal workload and to provide complete fabrication support.
  • Serve as the primary interface with clients for services that are related only to fabrication or repair.
  • Provides leadership, training, mentoring, and coaching to staff and other department personnel.
  • Oversees maintenance of equipment within the assigned area of responsibility and recommends improvements to lab capabilities consistent with emerging standards and technologies.
  • Evaluates external suppliers for electronic and mechanical fabrication capabilities and recommends critical make-versus-buy decisions regarding in-house fabrication or outsourcing.

Required Qualifications*

 

Associates degree in electronics plus 5-8 years related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Working knowledge of EEE fabrication and assembly standards and techniques including IPC-J-STD-001*S Joint Industry Standard, Space Applications Electronic Hardware Addendum

Technical writing for fabrication work instructions

Intermediate soldering skills

Familiarity with NASA-STD-8739.4, or equivalent

Familiarity with NASA-STD-8739.1, or equivalent

Desired Qualifications*

 

10+ years of Aerospace electronics assembly background

Production management experience

Supervisor, training, or mentoring experience in fabrication setting

Oversight of lab equipment and facilities

Certified in the following industry standards:

  • NASA-STD-8739.1 Workmanship Standard for Staking and Conformal Coating of Printed Wiring Boards and Electronic Assemblies
  • NASA-STD-8739.6 Implementation Requirements for NASA Workmanship Standards
  • IPC-J-STD-001*S Joint Industry Standard, Space Applications Electronic Hardware Addendum
  • NASA-STD-8739.4 Crimping, Interconnecting Cables, Harnesses, and Wiring or IPC/WHMA-A-620-S Requirements and Acceptance for Cable and Wire Harness Assemblies, Space Addendum
  • IPC-6012 Qualification and Performance Specification for Rigid Printed Boards, Revision D, IPC-6012DS addendum required
  • IPC-7711C/7721C Rework, Modification and Repair of Electronic Assemblies
