BASIC FUNCTION AND RESPONSIBILITY
In addition to the duties below, the supervisor may also perform the duties of a senior technologist (smaller laboratories, fewer than 6 direct reports).
Operational oversight:
Provide day-to-day administrative supervision of qualified personnel performing ordering, verifying, and reporting of laboratory and sendout tests.
Schedule employees to provide adequate and equitable staffing in all areas.
Supervise and coordinate daily operational activities.
Provide staff with ongoing information, education, and assistance to perform their duties.
Monitor and update workflow to achieve maximum productivity and quality.
Serve as resource person for technical and procedural problems from staff, management, and outside institutions.
Implement new and revised policies and procedures in the laboratory framework.
Establish an atmosphere that satisfies employees? physical needs and safety.
QC/QA/Compliance
Responsible for developing and monitoring quality assurance indicators and implementing course correction when needed.
Assure that all remedial actions are taken whenever systems deviate from the laboratory's established performance specifications.
Coordinate, Implement and participate in monitoring the laboratory Quality Assurance Program.
Assists with compliance of regulatory agencies (i.e., CLIA, CAP) rules and regulations.
Orientation/Training/Competency
Provides or coordinates orientation to hospital, lab, and department policies to all personnel.
Review and approve training checklists. Oversee and evaluate training of all personnel performing external result responsibilities and sendout resulting. Verifies staff are trained and competent prior to performing job responsibilities independently.
Oversees performance competency documents of personnel.
Personnel
Develop performance objectives for each employee and conduct formal reviews at least annually. Evaluate employee skills and assess educational and training needs periodically.
Provide timely and constructive feedback. Participate in the resolution of employee grievances. Counsel and discipline, as necessary.
Enforce attendance policy and assist with payroll for direct reports.
Review and approve vacation or other time off requests.
Provide an environment which motivates and enriches staff. Assist staff in personal and professional development. Collaborate with staff to improve workflow and create efficiencies.
Create opportunities for self and others to obtain additional skills and knowledge through a variety of methods.
Fulfill and assist employees with departmental continuing education requirements.
Communication and Teamwork - Use effective communication including written, verbal, and information technology skills. Work effectively with others to accomplish goals.
Leadership - Model professional behavior and serve as a resource for all medical and management staff.
Management
Work in cooperation with the management team to optimize workflow, to continually improve operations, and to plan future changes for the laboratory. Actively participate in setting goals and objectives for the lab.
Take an active part in creating laboratory policy, organizational. decisions, selecting candidates, introducing new procedures, and selecting new equipment.
Work with Lab Manager to evaluate and recommend changes to the department including equipment, supplies, and staffing.
Keep Lab Manager informed of problems or changes in procedures that impact the section or shift.
Perform Job Duties
Maintain expertise/competency in one or more areas under supervision to be able to adequately assess performance of staff and to provide assistance in event of short staffing situations.
CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Has working knowledge of all areas.
Direct, and assist staff with ordering, complex result reporting, computer, and technical problem solving.
Be cognizant of overtime and use only when necessary or when patient care is impacted, which would include taking assignments on weekends and holidays if staffing mandates.
Initiate and participate in daily huddles.
Conduct/participate in project staff meetings.
Participate in planning for and implementing new work processes, including testing and training for new computer system implementation.
Maintain current in all Pathology/Michigan Medicine computer systems.
Contribute ideas and help implement changes such as workflow reorganization.
Develop and maintain policies and procedures in the document control system.
Provide staff with unit orientation, analytical procedure training, MiChart and Soft training.
Monitor the use of equipment and maintenance of equipment when needed.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Supervision is received from the Administrative Manager, or other designee. Staff members in this classification are expected to work independently and in collaboration with other laboratory personnel, regularly exercise good judgment in setting priorities, resolving operational problems, and the application of policies, procedures, and methods.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
Functional and administrative supervision is exercised over laboratory technicians, and other assigned staff.
