Mission Statement

 

Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings.  Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.

Job Summary

 
  • Performs all duties of the Medical Assistant Associate or Medical Assistant Intermediate. 

  • Also, as applicable, will spend time performing duties including but not limited to facilitation of schedules, administrative and clinical operational tasks, new services/equipment implementation, education and mentorship of Medical Assistants and leadership/culture building.

Responsibilities*

 

Facilitation:

  • Reviews schedule to identify changes in daily operations and develops schedule rotation to support skill maintenance and cross-training for all Medical Assistants.
  • Maintains current competencies and mandatory training. Attends mandatory clinic and hospital training programs, as appropriate.

  • Participates in, prepares for, attends, and may lead meetings such as daily management huddles, rounds, and MA meetings.

  • Performs administrative and clinical operational tasks and duties assigned.

  • Participate in the implementation of new services or use of new equipment.

  • Oversees and is involved in the ordering process while striving to meet budgetary expectations.

  • Participates in Medication Management Surveys and may manage the inventory and ordering in the medication room within their scope of practice.

  • Coordinates use of exam/procedure room space.

  • Actively participates in regulatory compliance activities and ensures that the Regulatory Readiness checklists are completed and submitted. Responsible for action planning related to their role in clinic during any regulatory readiness or actual regulatory surveys.

  • Participates in value stream analysis for new products or services.

  • Participates in the generation of ideas and adoption processes of ways to improve workflows and enhance patient satisfaction.

  • Management and oversite of timely response to medication refill requests via Inbasket as well as insurance pre-auth in a fast-paced, high patient-volume ACU.

  • Management and oversite of MA schedules to ensure adequate coverage for in-person visits.

Education and Mentorship

  • Provides in-service training for Medical Assistants.

  • Supports orientation and shadowing opportunities as assigned.

  • May provide skill, competency, and workflow feedback to Medical Assistants and to staff members regarding clinical operations.

  • Supports ensuring that training/competencies for Blue Folders are current for Medical Assistants.

  • Serves as a subject matter expert in their clinic location mentoring other Medical Assistants to promote professionalism and growth.

  • Develops a curriculum to support the learning of best practices for Medical Assistants.

  • May organize and serve as a point of contact for Instructions for Use (IFUs).

Leadership and Culture Building:

  • Serves as a positive role model and plays an integral role in supporting the clinic?s leadership team.

  • Participate in recruitment efforts such as job fairs, recruitment events, or interviews.

  • May help delegate and participate in downtime activities.

  • Acts as a liaison for High Reliability, safety protocols, and other UMHS initiatives.

Required Qualifications*

 
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • 5+ years of experience as a Medical Assistant or Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) or Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) Certification. 
  • Experience working as a team lead. 
  • Knowledge of medical terminology.

Desired Qualifications*

 
  • Additional formal education in a health care field. 
  • Certification as a Medical Assistant.

Additional Information

 
  • Direct supervision is received from the Administrative Manager, Nurse Manager, Medical Director or Department Supervisor.
  • This position requires moderate standing/walking, as well as lifting, positioning, pushing, and/or transferring of patients.

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the United Michigan Medicine Allied Professionals (UMMAP), which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours, and other terms and conditions of employment.
