Job Summary

The Office of K-12 Partnerships is collaborating with Carman-Ainsworth Community Schools to bring the Math Corps summer program to the UM-Flint campus this summer. The Wayne State University Math Corps was established in 1992 as a combined mathematics enrichment and mentoring program for Detroit public school students. For over thirty years, the Math Corps has been working to provide children with the kinds of educational and lifetime opportunities that all kids deserve.

UM-Flint's Math Corps program will be held July 13- August 6, Monday - Thursday, with additional training sessions, orientation, and closing ceremonies before and after the program.

The High School Teaching Assistants (TA's) assist with instruction of the middle school participants. Main duties include: providing support in the classroom during instruction by keeping students on-task and engaged while also providing support and encouragement; providing homework help and tutoring outside of the classroom; serving as role models and chief stewards of the program culture; attending TA training; keeping a daily journal and attending daily debriefing; and most importantly, serving as big brothers and big sisters to the younger students.

  • Report immediately to their CI or a member of the senior staff, anything at all that may threaten the well-being, physically or emotionally, of any student.
  • Carry out all academic responsibilities and assignments related to their own instruction in their assigned Algebra courses, including daily homework and weekly guided journals.
  • Be responsible for working with students during the morning in Team Time, where they will mentor and tutor their assigned middle school student(s) in their grade level mathematics.
