Job Summary

 

The University of Michigan's College of Literature, Science, and the Arts is hiring a Three-Year Term-Limited AV Project Engineer Associate to join a diverse team of professionals dedicated to successful design, installation, and systems integration of AV equipment in classrooms, conference rooms, and event spaces across the College of LSA. This position focuses on In-field AV integration and service to assist in the deployment of LSA's new AV monitoring platform across the college's catalog of spaces. You will report to the manager of AV System Integration, Engineering, and Design in LSA Technology Services. Salary Range: $54,000-$65,775. Salary will be based on the skills and background of the selected candidate.

Responsibilities*

 

In this three-year term-limited position, you will work with the team of experienced and inspired AV professionals to design, install, and maintain AV systems in classrooms, conference rooms, event spaces, and teaching and learning spaces in LSA. AV System Integration, Engineering, and Design team members participate in multiple complex AV projects in the College of LSA and across UM. The team has also led and installed the AV systems in major campus renovations and construction.

You will participate in all aspects of projects from initiation through to commissioning, training, second and third tier maintenance; this includes reporting to leadership and partners of project status, goals and milestones; identification of required resources; construction review; AV system design; installation; commissioning; post project review, etc. You will provide associate level leadership and mentorship, positively contributing to a collegial culture as a key member of the team, advancing innovation in AV integration, instructional technology, and LSA's Technology Services group as a whole.

You will be able to grow and learn as you work on some of the most exciting AV integration projects on campus. You will work with other project engineers to prepare and disseminate specialized project documentation in support of unit projects and major initiatives. This includes working on designs, visualizations, rack elevation documentations, and AV documentation.

Your peers will have your back as you present your solutions for knowledge sharing and feedback. You will have dedicated time to updating your knowledge and focusing on your own professional development.

ABOUT YOU

You have a foundation of experiences and a variety of skills in AV integration and installation. You have experience working on AV integration projects simultaneously, maintenance projects,
installations, and equipment upgrades. We care about teaching and learning and need those spaces to work consistently. It would be helpful if you have demonstrated experience working on
construction sites and following all required safety regulations, OSHA guidelines, and local job site requirements. A working knowledge of principles and procedures of at least one specialized field of AV systems and digital AV technologies is also beneficial as it will help the team complete renovations, new construction, and new installations, and maintain and troubleshoot existing systems.

You'll work with people from many different cultures and backgrounds, some more technical than others, and each requiring you to develop relationships. It will be important that you can talk with people who are dedicated to teaching and learning and conducting research, but who also may not have the AV background. We need to be able to help them understand why we make certain recommendations for equipment and installations.

You might have an Associate's degree or Bachelor's degree. You might not. The equivalent technical training and relevant AV technology experience, or equivalent work experience in one of the following areas AV Systems Integration and Installation Project Engineering, AV Systems Design, Audio Engineering, would be great. We care about what you can do and how you do it, not about the journey of how you got where you are. A record of conscientious, collaborative, and thoughtful work speaks volumes.

Required Qualifications*

 
  • Associate's degree or equivalent technical training, supplemented with continuing education/telecom courses/technical seminars
  • At least 1-2 years of relevant AV technology experience (or equivalent work experience in one of the following areas: AV Systems Integration/Installation, Technical Sound Studio Setup, Live Show AV Engineering)
  • Strong technical skills with the ability to evaluate situations utilizing logical and decisive reasoning; Creative problem solving abilities and technical analysis skills, Analyze issues in the
    field make decisions as position allows
  • Demonstrated experience with a common ticketing system and standard productivity applications (Google, Word, Excel), as well as basic online communication tools (Slack, Google Chat, Teams, Zoom, etc.) and file organization in shared folders
  • Demonstrated history of strong AV technical skills with the ability to assess and evaluate possible interventions with AV systems utilizing logical and decisive reasoning
  • Demonstrated experience in creative problem solving abilities and technical analysis skills in Tier 2 AV troubleshooting; including analyzing issues in the field and make decisions for resolution as appropriate, and operating professional test instruments
  • Demonstrated history of effective communication skills, explaining issues, assisting non-technical users, and guiding AV technicians to successfully resolve technical problems
  • Demonstrated history of av mounting techniques (video projectors, flat panel displays, video screens, speakers & microphones) within concrete, block, drywall, acoustical ceiling, etc)
  • Demonstrated experience with the use and safety of power tools (Drills, Hammer-Drills, Saws, etc) & Hand Tools
  • The ability to read blueprints,schematics and/or other construction documentation
  • Demonstrated Low-Voltage Cable Termination experience
  • Demonstrated history of effective customer service and positive collaborative teamwork

Physical Requirements

This position does require the person in this position to be able to move and transport objects such as projectors, screens, monitors, AV racks, and AV podia with weight up to 50lbs (frequency of working with the maximum weight may be up to several times a week). The person in this position will also need to negotiate and climb a 12ft ladder to install AV equipment in classrooms, auditoriums, and departmental spaces. This will involve maneuvering projectors and other equipment (weight of up to 35 lbs) to installation location on ceilings and walls. Additional physical requirements also include: Travel between buildings during inclement weather; Move cart-based equipment between buildings; Work in enclosed spaces, particularly around installed rack units in enclosed spaces; Work for an extended period of time to access AV racks, panels, and equipment at height of 3 to 7 feet.

Desired Qualifications*

 
  • CTS Certification or equivalent
  • Demonstrated experience working AV/IT projects in Higher Ed environment and working with clients/customers on AV integration projects, as well as design, installations, repairs, and
    maintenance projects
  • Broad knowledge of principles, practices, and procedures of the specialized field of AV Systems and Digital AV technologies for instructional initiatives in Higher Education and university
    environment.
  • Knowledge of pedagogical, technological, and learning space design trends, especially as they relate to face-to-face instruction, active learning/flipped classrooms, and blended/remote learning
  • Experience installing and supporting conference room and classroom's IT and AV technologies, integrating complex digital systems within classroom settings
  • Manufacturer certifications (eg: Crestron, Dante)
  • Experience in Scaffolding and/or Man-Lifts

Work Schedule

 

We feel strongly about work-life balance. While we love to work hard and finish projects, we will not work you to tears, burn you out, or make you choose between work and important family events. Our goal is for you to maintain a healthy relationship between life and work. Most of our team works 8 hours per day Monday through Friday, although some members do work 4 days with 10 hours/day. While our team does not typically work late or work weekends, there may be rare occasions where team members just want to get the work done when a classroom is empty and therefore may flex their schedule to come in on weekends or evenings to wrap things up. Your manager is eager to work with you to craft a schedule that is predictable and adjustable.

Because our team's work is in the classrooms and conference rooms, installation work does require someone to be on campus much of the time. There are tasks, however, that require time and space to concentrate and focus. That might be design review, documentation and modeling, and other systems design/programming. Those tasks often can be done from home. We like to have an environment where there is the flexibility to get the work done in the best possible way.
