Job Summary

 

The Student Success Center at the University of Michigan-Flint is seeking a creative and dependable individual to support the First Gen Success @ UM-Flint initiative, funded by the Life-Changing Education Grant. This individual will assist with social media, marketing, videography, and video editing to help highlight first-generation student stories, promote student success programming, and build awareness of campus resources.

The role includes creating engaging social media posts, recording and editing short-form videos, taking photos at events, organizing content, and helping share meaningful stories that connect with UM-Flint students. The ideal individual will have strong communication skills, attention to detail, creativity, and an interest in student success, first-generation student experiences, and digital storytelling.

Responsibilities*

 
  • Assist with capturing first-generation student stories for the First Gen Success @ UM-Flint initiative.
  • Record interviews, student reflections, and program footage that will be used to create short documentary-style films.
  • Help set up basic lighting, audio, and camera equipment for filming sessions.
  • Edit interview footage and short video segments for clarity, flow, storytelling, and engagement.
  • Support the development of short documentary films that highlight the experiences, challenges, successes, and voices of first-generation students.
  • Add captions and assist with accessibility needs for all video content.
  • Organize and manage video files, photos, interview clips, and final edited content.
  • Assist with creating short promotional clips for social media, web, and campus use.
  • Occasionally attend events or program sessions to take photos and record video footage.
  • Communicate with Student Success Center staff to gather information about filming needs, program highlights, and upcoming events.
  • Help maintain a content calendar for video releases, social media posts, and promotional materials.
  • Assist with creating engaging social media content to promote First Gen Success @ UM-Flint.
  • Support the overall storytelling, marketing, and visibility of the First Gen Success @ UM-Flint initiative funded through the Life-Changing Education Grant.

Required Qualifications*

 
  • Experience with video recording and video editing
  • Ability to support the creation of short documentary-style films
  • Basic understanding of camera, lighting, and audio setup
  • Proficiency with Adobe Premiere Pro
  • Strong writing and communication skills
  • Ability to create clear, engaging, and professional social media content
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently and meet deadlines
  • Dependability and professionalism when working with students, staff, and campus partners
  • Creativity and interest in storytelling, student success, and first-generation student experiences
  • Basic knowledge of common social media platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, LinkedIn, and X/Twitter
  • Willingness to maintain student privacy and follow university expectations when working with student stories, photos, and video content

  • Current UM-Flint student or recently graduated from UM-Flint

Onsite
The work requires, or the supervisor approves a fully onsite presence.  Onsite is defined as a designated U-M owned or leased work location within or outside of the State of Michigan
