The Michigan Institute for Clinical & Health Research (MICHR) is the home of the University of Michigan's Clinical and Translational Science Award from the National Institutes of Health. MICHR is part of a national, collaborative consortium that is focused on delivering more health solutions to all people more quickly by advancing clinical and translational science (CTS). The field of CTS aims to build an evidence base of scientific and operational approaches that improve the efficiency, effectiveness, and impact of translational research across a range of diseases and conditions. MICHR has the unique charge of examining the translational research ecosystem at a systems level to determine where common pitfalls exist; developing novel solutions to these challenges; demonstrating their effectiveness; and disseminating improvements widely. MICHR is a dynamic organization that serves as a hub of innovation and experimentation to advance research in the science of translation and accelerate the realization of interventions that improve human health.

MICHR is seeking an Institute Managing Director to partner with the Executive Director and leadership team to shape and execute MICHR's strategic vision, oversee the institute-wide portfolio of translational science programs and initiatives, and ensure measurable impact. The Institute Managing Director will provide enterprise leadership for strategy development, process improvement, performance measurement, and cross-program collaboration; build partnerships across U-M and external stakeholders; operationalize and support current and future Clinical & Translational Science Award (CTSA) activities; and serve as MICHR's primary administrative liaison to NIH-NCATS. In addition, this role will oversee MICHR's administrative, operational, and financial functions.

Strategy Development, Execution, and Oversight:

• Partner with the Executive Director and leadership team to develop and implement the MICHR strategic vision with short- and long-term goals.
• Create, implement and evaluate systematic and robust processes and methods for advancing translational science across MICHR.
• Guide the creation of new innovations and strategic initiatives grounded in the needs of the research community.
• Manage the MICHR-wide portfolio of translational science activities, including projects, education and dissemination.
• Partner closely with MICHR programs to ensure alignment of initiatives and activities with the overarching institute mission and with translational science. Ensure programs are using appropriate methods to identify gaps and opportunities in programming, to prototype and test solutions, and to disseminate evidence-informed solutions. Ensure programs are building robust partnerships with relevant U-M units and other critical stakeholders throughout the various phases of diagnosing and solving translational science problems.
• Foster cross-programmatic collaborations and workgroups to efficiently and effectively drive understanding and mitigation of roadblocks in the translational pipeline.
• Ensure the highest quality work across MICHR, developing and monitoring performance metrics and identifying and operationalizing opportunities for improvement.
• Oversee operationalization of the Clinical & Translational Science Award (CTSA) grant.
• Support the conceptualization, writing and preparation of future CTSA and related grant applications, serving as a vision partner to the Executive Director and MICHR faculty and staff subject matter experts.
• Lead creation and monitoring of the MICHR-wide workplan, ensuring programmatic reporting on progress and challenges and coordinating support for perceived challenges.
• Responsible for the MICHR-wide data collection platform, including facilitating updates in alignment with reporting requirements and quality control audits.
• Responsible for data collection, analyses, interpretation, and preparation of communications written reports, executive briefings, and presentations to inform MICHR leadership, U-M, and the NIH.
• Responsible for MICHR?s annual NIH Research Performance Progress Report.
• Responsible for the coordination and implementation of MICHR's External Advisory Board and Internal Advisory Board meetings and NIH site visits.
• Serve as spokesperson for MICHR at various venues locally and nationally.
• Serve as the administrative point of contact for NIH-NCATS.
• Disseminate best practices through publications, presentations, and other methods.

Partnership Development:

• Collaborate with stakeholders to identify and implement interventions that remove impediments and increase the efficiency and impact of research.
• Collaborate with stakeholders to ensure efficiency and effectiveness in achieving common goals, synthesizing information, crafting strategic plans, ensuring buy-in, tracking outcomes, and identifying areas for improvement.
• Represent MICHR and the Executive Director in various high-level, cross-unit meetings.
• Explore opportunities to expand MICHR?s reach and increase engagement and collaboration with U-M schools/colleges, departments/divisions, and units.
• Participate in CTSA consortium and workgroup activities as relevant.

Administrative, Operational, and Financial Responsibilities:

• Oversight and responsibility for all administrative, operational and financial matters for the institute.
• Serve as liaison for all aspects of the institute's functional performance, including operations, communications, and finance/budgeting.
• As needed, provide advice in the area of intellectual property and technology transfer.
• Provide leadership to MICHR programs and staff, leveraging own professional expertise as well as the knowledge and skills of others.
• Responsible for allocation of human, space, fiscal and material resources.
• Have an impact on budgeting, controlling costs, planning, scheduling, and procedural change.
• Management duties include interviewing, selecting, and training employees; setting and adjusting their rates of pay and hours of work; planning and directing their work; appraising their productivity and efficiency for the purpose of recommending promotions or other changes in their status; handling their complaints and grievances and disciplining them when necessary.
• Management responsibilities include the authority to hire, fire, or promote assigned employees or make recommendations that are given particular weight.

• Advanced degree in biomedical sciences, health sciences, or a related field. 
• Considerable team leader experience and collaborative leadership style. 
• Substantial knowledge of the National Institutes of Health and grant writing experience, including complex applications.
• Experience leading a large portfolio of programs/projects with structured governance.
• Proven track record of developing and implementing strategic initiatives and executing process improvements in a complex environment.
• Ability to communicate complex information clearly to faculty leaders, staff teams, institutional leadership, and NIH program staff.
• Experience producing executive-ready materials, such as materials for board meetings, site visits, SBARs, and strategy narratives.
• Demonstrated ability to present and gain acceptance of ideas and proposals. 
• Organized, results-oriented, and able to successfully sustain multiple ongoing initiatives simultaneously and to meet tight deadlines. 
• Excellent writing and oral communication skills.  
   

• PhD in biomedical sciences, health sciences, or a related field. 
• Direct experience working at a Clinical & Translational Science Award hub or comparable large-scale NIH-funded center.
