Job Summary

 

Established in 1949, the Institute for Social Research (ISR) is the world?s largest academic social science survey and research organization and is a leader in developing and applying new social science methods.  The ISR scientific mission includes the planning and conduct of high-quality social science research, the dissemination of findings from this research, and the training of future generations of social scientists. The research is conducted through faculty and staff within five research centers, with central portions of administration handled through the ISR Center for Institute Services.

ISR is searching for a temporary full-time Facilities Assistant to join our team. This position will report to the Building/Facilities Manager and will support facilities operations. 

Responsibilities*

 

What you'll do

  • Assist with routine maintenance tasks, including basic repairs, inspections, and upkeep of facilities. Call in or submit ticket to UM work order systems
  • Respond promptly to maintenance requests and facility-related issues
  • Set up and break down conference room furniture for meetings, events, and special requests
  • Maintain and update the facilities work request system, ensuring tickets are accurately logged, tracked, and resolved in a timely manner
  • Support office moves, furniture setup, and workspace reconfigurations
  • Monitor building systems (HVAC, lighting, plumbing) and report issues as needed
  • Coordinate with external vendors and service providers for repairs and maintenance work
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of common areas, storage rooms, and equipment
  • Conduct regular walkthroughs to identify safety hazards or maintenance needs
  • Assist with inventory management of supplies, tools, and equipment
  • Help with emergency preparedness tasks and response when required
  • Provided support for internal mail services, including mail sorting, distribution, shipping coordination, and maintaining organized mailroom operations.
  • Serve as back up to any position as needed within the Facilities Team.
  • Other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications*

 

We'd like to hear from you if you have:

  • High school diploma or equivalent, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Ability to routinely move equipment and furniture up to 50 pounds.

  • Demonstrate ability to manage multiple tasks, meet multiple deadlines and work collegially and collaboratively in a team environment.  

  • Exceptional customer service skills and ability to communicate clearly and professionally with a diverse clientele base.

  • Demonstrated ability to exercise discretion with sensitive and confidential information is required.

Desired Qualifications*

 

Experience using ticketing or work order systems e.g., Facilities Service Center (FSC), AiM Work Desk

This position will be onsite at the Institute for Social Research 426 Thompson St. Ann Arbor, MI. 

Monday - Friday 7:30am - 4:30pm
