This position will serve as the manager for the Clinical Research Specimen Processing (CRSP) Core of the Oncology Clinical Trial Support Unit (O-CTSU) providing biospecimen management to clinical research investigators of the University of Michigan Rogel Cancer Center - an NCI-Designated Comprehensive Cancer Center and a member of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN).

This position oversees a growing core team of seven staff who provide Rogel investigators support with processing, short-term storage, shipping, and handling of 1500+ research specimens for 100+ clinical trials and studies per month across three locations including Brighton Center for Specialty Care and upcoming Troy Center for Specialty Care. We are seeking a candidate who engages in service excellence and quality; actively demonstrates a commitment to the University of Michigan's core values to build a culture of respect, integrity, and inclusion within the unit; answers complex queries regarding sample data; gains expertise in all areas of sample management and reporting; and instructs staff in established SOPs, lab maintenance, and work aids. The role is also responsible for interviewing, hiring, firing, promotions, training, and mentoring.

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities:

• Responsible for the core's operational effectiveness in attaining annual unit goals, servicing research customers, and maintaining quality control of processes. Purchases and maintains laboratory equipment and supplies. Manages physical facility demands in multiple locations. Establishes standard workflows, research project effort estimates, and future service direction. Rarely perform duties of direct reports, except during times of resource limitations. When performing duties of direct reports, this position requires the ability to stand for extended time periods. Candidate must be able to lift 50 pounds from the floor and raise 35-pound centrifuge lid continuously throughout the day. Fine motor skills for pipetting, labeling, and tissue transfers are vital
• Provides leadership and professional expertise in laboratory processing and clinical research coordination. Leverages the knowledge and skills of others through partnership of other O-CTSU units and collaborations of CTSO/UMOR to achieve efficient, cost-effective, consensus driven solutions to the unique challenges of clinical research.
• Management duties include interviewing, selecting, and training employees; setting and adjusting their rates of pay and hours of work; planning and directing their work; appraising their productivity and efficiency for the purpose of recommending promotions or other changes in their status; handling their complaints and grievances and disciplining them when necessary.
• Manages the configuration and ongoing administration of OnCore Biospecimen Management module and potentially new applicants.
• Ensures that all activities are compliant with organization goals and applicable regulations.

This position reports directly to the O-CTSU Associate Director for Operations.

• Establishes goals and recommended strategic direction or expansion of services.
• Coordinates laboratory administration including purchasing and maintenance of laboratory equipment and supplies; and works with facilities on space needs.
• May have subordinate functional supervising specialists.

• Bachelor's degree and considerable professional experience with considerable prior management, supervisory or team leader experience.
• Demonstrated track record of strategic goal setting and execution in a research laboratory setting.

• 10+ years of direct related experience in a research lab with human subjects' specimens
• 3+ years of directly related experience in pharma sponsored clinical research and clinical trials is necessary
• 2+ years of managerial experience

This position will be primarily onsite with occasional remote work for administrative days with approval. Positions that are eligible for hybrid or mobile/remote work mode are at the discretion of the hiring department. Monday through Friday, core business hours.  Occasionally early evening work to support patient care.  During periods of high volume, manager may regularly be needed via telephone to troubleshoot late afternoon/early evening lab issues.  On call pay may be applied.
