Job Summary

 

The Metabolomics Core of the University of Michigan Biomedical Research Core Facilities (BRCF) has an immediate need for a full-time temporary intern.  Expected duration of the temporary appointment is up to one year (dependent on performance) with possibility of extension.  

Responsibilities*

 

A primary responsibility of this position will be to perform sample preparation for metabolomic analysis, including careful weighing of frozen tissue samples (skeletal muscle, liver, etc.), and metabolite extraction from tissues, blood plasma, and other biofluids.  Additional responsibilities will include weighing, solvating, and analyzing standard compounds, and other general laboratory tasks. 

Candidate will work in a coordinated manner with other members of the Metabolomics Core and will be responsible for coordinating tasks with others, reporting progress, maintaining good laboratory records, and following laboratory safety protocols.  

Required Qualifications*

 

A bachelor's degree in a scientific field and 1+ years of laboratory work experience is required.

Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Word is essential; understanding of basic statistical methods and some experience using R is desired.

Good laboratory skills, and the ability to work with minimal supervision in a team environment.

Patience and attention to detail.  

Ability to closely follow a standard operating procedure, carefully note observations and/or deviations from expected results, and routine delivery of accurate, well-curated data is expected.

Additional Information

 

The candidate will also spend some portion of his or her time learning how these samples are analyzed using liquid chromatography - mass spectrometry, and their remaining time analyzing mass spectral data using Agilent Masshunter software and other software tools on a desktop PC.
