The Senior Manager of Accounting (SMA) plays a key role in the accounting and financial reporting functions of Michigan Medicine's Academic Medical Center (AMC), with particular emphasis on the Shared Services functions across the Health System. The SMA manages the method of allocating expenses to the clinical enterprises and Medical School and develops and implements integration plans to consolidate central corporate services across the enterprise, creating efficiencies and building productive, versatile, cross-system teams. Reporting to the Health System Senior Director of Accounting, the AM serves as a member of the Finance management team.

Primary Roles and Responsibilities

The SMA performs the following responsibilities:

• Overseeing month-end close processes for the AMC and Shared Services departments, including journal entry review and preparation of financial reports.  The AM will lead performance assessment and accounting treatment discussions with the Senior Director of Accounting, Associate Chief Financial Officers, the Michigan Medicine CFO, and other members of the senior leadership team (Vice Presidents of Finance, Chief of Revenue Cycle, Chief of Contracting and Managed Care, Senior Director of Reimbursement), highlighting key variances and operational drivers.
• Coordinating the annual operating budget process for the Shared Services departments to align with Michigan Medicine's strategic and operational plans, collaborating with the Senior Director of Financial Planning and Analysis, and coordinating budgets spanning the Academic Medical Center (AMC), Regional Health Network, and School of Medicine. Providing frequent, clear, consistent, communication around timing and assumptions. 
• Leading integration efforts between the AMC and Regional Health Network (building a framework for a central corporate service across all clinical, education, and research sites, as well as contributing to Enterprise Resource Planning System implementation and acting as a team member and advocate for Michigan Medicine).
• Supporting the annual external audit process through effective working relationships with audit firm partners and staff, in coordination with the University. 
• Maintaining internal financial controls, ensuring the accuracy of accounting entries, preventing waste, fraud, and abuse of financial resources, and establishing and running processes that meet external audit standards.
• Managing personnel through direct reporting relationships or through influence, ensuring best practices from the accounting staff and productive inter-company transactions with the University, and managing staff across multiple geographies and employers.

Other Responsibilities

• Serve as the manager of two direct reports: Finance and Business Analysts.
• Build strong, positive relationships with key administrative and clinical leaders throughout Michigan Medicine and the University, firmly establishing trust and credibility.
• Ensure that Michigan Medicine's resources are deployed with integrity and aligned with the goals of the clinical and academic enterprises.
• Act as a senior partner in the analysis and due diligence of existing business entities relative to restructuring, acquisitions, and/or divestitures to meet strategic objectives.
• Ensure the integrity of financial reporting systems and develop management reporting tools to enable leaders to make effective business decisions.
• Build productive relationships and promote a collaborative work environment.
• Recruit, select, and manage a staff of direct and indirect reports by professional leadership, mentoring, counseling, reorganization, and other personnel management initiatives. Set job expectations and performance standards for team members that contribute to the overall success of Michigan Medicine. Coach and mentor direct reports and others to ensure individual and organizational effectiveness.

Education

The SMA is required to hold a bachelor's degree in accounting, business or public administration, finance, health administration, public health, health economics, or a related field from an accredited institution of higher education.

Experience

The SMA possesses:

• A minimum of 8 years of successful, progressive experience leading a finance function within the health care industry (experience with academic health systems or affiliates preferred).

   

• Experience with risk management in a complex, multi-hospital, and geographically dispersed clinical enterprise.

• Exposure to scaling accounting processes and systems in response to hospital or health system acquisitions, partnerships, affiliations, and joint ventures.

• A strong business orientation with the ability to go beyond the numbers 

• Helps the senior executive team identify and develop opportunities for optimizing assets and strengthening the organization's financial performance.

• An ability to be highly strategic, agile, and able to handle complex business and risk issues.

• Solid expertise in building a financial team that has its eye on the future and is responsive to its constituencies.

• Strong executive presentation skills, including the ability to influence, negotiate, and communicate effectively at all levels.

• A collaborative leadership style through direct, open, and honest communications.

• A history of success working with multiple constituencies and within layered governance structures.

A master's degree in a similar discipline is preferred.
