Responsibilities*

 

To assist the Clinical Nursing Director in planning, coordinating, and managing the clinical and administrative operations of the ECMO Program at University of Michigan Health, Michigan Medicine. To provide leadership in the practice of nursing and care of the ECMO patient, emphasizing quality patient care, education, and research.  To assist in coordinating management and patient care activities consistent with the University of Michigan Health mission and vision.  Administrative and functional supervision is exercised over ECMO staff as delegated by the Clinical Nursing Director.

 

Duties (include but not limited to)

  • Foster an environment that supports Patient and Family Centered Care by creating a positive and caring experience with every interaction.
  • Selected candidate will plan, assign, and supervise the work of ECMO staff; serve as an ECMO liaison for the multidisciplinary team.
  • Selected candidate must be able to provide clinical direction, procedural expertise, and support in all areas of ECMO; provide care to patient populations across the age continuum, including infants, pediatric, adolescent and/or adult patient populations.
  • Provide direct ECMO practice and expertise, serve as a resource to ECMO staff.
  • Actively participate in orienting, mentoring, supporting, providing periodic review, and feedback to department staff.
  • Provide supervision, counseling, coaching, and evaluation of departmental staff.
  • Participate in the development, implementation, and revision of individual performance plans.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of unit or area goals and objectives.
  • Participate in the planning and problem solving of daily unit/area operations, priorities of patient services, and urgent and emergent care. 
  • Interpret and implement the Hospital and University policies and procedures and the standards of regulatory agencies.
  • Share coverage rotation with department manager for 24/7 phone/pager coverage addressing departmental operational needs.
  • Provide direct care 100% of the time when activity and patient care necessitate, including ECMO transports (ground/rotor/fixed winged).
  • Provide input into the payroll and commodity budget planning process.
  • Participate as delegated by the manager in budget management, payroll, commodity tracking.
  • Facilitate open channels of communication among staff, management, peers, physicians, and other members of the healthcare team.  Provide advanced problem-solving as needed.
  • Participate in new program development and implementation.
  • Participate in planning, organizing, and evaluating ECMO standards, guidelines, and educational activities.
  • Monitor, document, and implement continuous quality improvement programs.
  • Collaborate with the Education Coordinator to implement competency-based orientation.
  • Anticipate and respond to patient/family issues and concerns.

Required Qualifications*

 

Required Educational Requirement:
Applicant must meet one of the following:
Bachelors degree in Respiratory Therapy, Allied Health, or other health care science

  • Current RT licensure in the state of Michigan.
  • Minimum five (5) years RT experience.
  • Minimum 2 years of recent (within the last 5 years) RT experience as ECMO Specialist (all patient populations).
  • Demonstrated progressive leadership skills including charge nurse, team leader, or other management experience.

  • Consultative and teaching skills.
  • Masters degree.
  • Demonstrated ability to assess, interpret and analyze ECMO practice independently and collaboratively.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with administrators, physicians, peers, and staff.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively as a member of the healthcare team.
  • Demonstrated experience with and knowledge of current medical, interventional, and pharmaceutical treatment modalities of ECMO practice.
  • Demonstrated excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills required to provide leadership and foster interdisciplinary collaboration.
  • Knowledge of management theories.
  • Experience with quality improvement activities.
  • Evidence of ability to assess, interpret and analyze clinical information independently and collaboratively.
  • Computer competency including Word, Excel and be able to extract data from university supported computer databases.

Modes of Work

 

Positions that are eligible for hybrid or mobile/remote work mode are at the discretion of the hiring department. Work agreements are reviewed annually at a minimum and are subject to change at any time, and for any reason, throughout the course of employment. Learn more about the work modes.

Work Schedule

 

Hours/Week: 40 hours
Shift: Predominately Day shift, however off shifts and weekends will be required.
Location: U-M Health Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) Department

Background Screening
