Responsibilities*

 
  • Attend all lectures and discussions
  • Complete all readings
  • Meet with instructor once per week (1 hour)
  • Assist with preparation of course materials, including updating lecture and discussion material
  • Assist with all small group discussions/role plays
  • Lead evaluation of course participation
  • Create and manage content on Canvas, including the return of graded materials
  • Hold at least one office hour per week
  • Grade individual and team assignments
     

Required Qualifications*

 
  • Coursework in one or more of the following areas: Organizational change & management; Sustainability; Social advocacy; Systems thinking; Grand challenges
  • Intermediate competency in Word & Excel as well as in using Canvas
  • Applicant must be in good standing as a graduate student at the University of Michigan. If the language of instruction at a student's undergraduate institution was not English, they must be evaluated by the English Language Institute (ELI) for English proficiency and either pass the GSI-OET or have this test waived by the ELI before they can be eligible for a GSI appointment in LS&A.

Desired Qualifications*

 
  • Strong preference and priority given to applicants with experience in sustainability, organizational/systems change, and/or social advocacy/change. Ability to provide a unique and valuable perspective in this field during the course is highly valued.
  • Although previous GSI teaching experience is NOT required, experience successfully instructing and mentoring students in traditional or non-traditional settings is desirable.
  • Demonstrated experience in student project management or professional consulting project management preferred in order to provide guidance to student project teams (many of the projects and in-class assignments in this class are team-based)
  • Experience in evaluating and critiquing student writing
     

Course Description

 

This course is designed to introduce students to different ways individuals and organizations drive efforts to address social and environmental challenges. Throughout the course, students will have the opportunity to explore different social and environmental problems, the systems that shape them, and various types of change agents working to address them. Most assignments are team-based, and class sessions will be interactive and discussion-based to encourage critical and thoughtful dialogue around social change work in and through organizations. 
By the end of the course, students should be able to:

  • Define and identify the characteristics of grand challenges
  • Identify key parts of a system and how to map them 
  • Identify and analyze different ways of organizing to create social change (including social entrepreneurship, insider social change, place-based organizing, and cross-sector partnerships for social change)
  • Apply a systems thinking lens to a particular social or environmental problem and develop an action plan for addressing the issue
  • Develop and apply group learning and effective project management skills
