Operational oversight:
Provide day-to-day administrative supervision of Phlebotomy personnel performing specimen collection duties in the inpatient and outpatient settings.
Schedule employees to provide adequate and equitable staffing in all areas.
Supervise and coordinate daily operational lab activities.
Provide staff with ongoing information and assistance to perform their duties
Monitor and make changes to workflow to achieve maximum productivity and quality
Serve as resource person for technical and procedural problems from staff and outside institutions.
Implement new and revised policies and procedures in the laboratory framework.
Establish an atmosphere that satisfies employees? physical needs and safety
QC/QA/Compliance
Assists with compliance with regulatory agency (i.e., CLIA, CAP) rules and regulations.
Adhering to the laboratory's Quality Control policies and documenting all Quality Control activities.
Maintain proficiency in all tests that you analyze and report.
Orientation/Training/Competency
Provides or coordinates orientation to lab and department policies to all testing personnel.
Review and approve training checklists. Oversee and evaluate training of all personnel performing laboratory testing. Verifies staff are trained and competent prior to performing testing on patient specimens independently.
Oversee performance competency documents of testing personnel.
Customer service: provides total customer focus to meet the needs of every customer, internal and external, medical staff, laboratory staff, patients and families.
Specimen collection: performs phlebotomy or order entry procedures when needed to assist
Specimen handling
Computer data entry enters laboratory test orders into LIS
Safety: complies with safety instructions and observes safe work practices
Personnel
Develop performance objectives for each employee and conduct formal reviews at least annually. Evaluate employee skills and assess educational and training needs periodically.
Provide timely and constructive feedback. Participate in the resolution of employee grievances. Counsel and discipline as necessary.
Enforce attendance policy and approve payroll for direct reports.
Review and approve vacation or other time off requests.
Provide an environment which motivates and enriches staff. Assist staff in personal and professional development. Work with staff to improve workflow and create efficiencies.
Create opportunities for self and others to obtain additional skills and knowledge through a variety of methods.
Fulfill and assist employees with departmental continuing education requirements.
Management
Work in cooperation with the management team to optimize workflow within the laboratory, to continually improve operations, and to plan future changes for the laboratory. Actively participate in setting goals and objectives for the lab.
Take an active part in creating laboratory policy, organizational. decisions, selecting candidates, introducing new procedures, and selecting new equipment.
Work with Lab Manager to evaluate and recommend changes to the lab including equipment, supplies, and staffing
Keep Lab Manager informed of problems or changes in procedures that impact the section or shift.
Perform Testing
Maintain expertise/competency in one or more areas under supervision to be able to adequately assess performance of staff and to provide assistance in event of short staffing situations.

Provides staff with unit orientation, analytical procedure training, phlebotomy collection services training, and assists in phlebotomy skills training.
Assures competency of staff through observations.
Provides annual performance review for staff. Monitors staff Cornerstone plans.
Assists with hiring of new staff.
Heavily involved in performance management of staff.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Supervision is received from the Administrative Manager, or other designee.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
Administrative supervision is exercised over specimen processors, phlebotomists, LPN, laboratory technicians, medical technologists, medical technologist specialists, and other assigned staff.
Functional supervision is exercised over specimen processors, phlebotomists, LPN, laboratory technicians, medical Technologists, medical technologist specialists, senior technologists, and other assigned staff.
