Job Summary

 

Department Summary:

Wolverine Wellness (WW) is a health promotion unit whose work is guided by evidence-based strategic interventions, collaboration, and innovations utilizing a multidimensional model of well-being. To improve the overall health and well-being of U-M students, WW utilizes a socio-ecological, motivational interviewing, and a collective impact framework. From addressing individual attitudes and behaviors to fostering a supportive and inclusive campus climate, WW promotes health using a wide range of public health approaches. The unit is guided by the World Health Organization components of health promotion, prevention, personal skill development, strengthening community action, creating supportive environments, and policy/system level change management.

Position Summary:

The Associate Director for Wolverine Wellness (WW) serves on the WW Leadership team and provides long-term strategic visioning, goal setting, management, and evaluation of WW's services and programs overall. This includes planning and coordination of the core actions of health promotion: prevention, personal skill development, creating supportive environments, strengthening community action, and policy and system change. This position reports to the Director of Health Promotion and Wolverine Wellness and provides direct supervision for Health Promotion Specialists and other staff who do comprehensive Prevention & High-risk Planning; Education, Promotion and Outreach (EPO); and Academic Partnership work. In addition, the position supervises graduate and undergraduate student staff.

The Associate Director leads Health Promotion & Prevention education, promotion, and outreach (EPO) efforts and collaborates with campus partners to lead institution-wide efforts around Prevention & High-Risk Planning and serves on the Well-being Collective Backbone Infrastructure team (i.e., forwarding Action Team efforts and the JED Campus strategic plan).

The Associate Director also works closely with the Director, the Well-being Collective Lead, and the WW Lead Team to determine long-term goals, assess and evaluate current resources and initiatives, and provide budget management. 
 

Responsibilities*

 

Manage Health Promotion & Prevention Education, Promotion and Outreach (EPO) Operations (60%)

  • Provide long-term strategic visioning, goal setting, management, and evaluation of WW's services and programs overall; planning and coordination of the core actions of health promotion: prevention, personal skill development, creating supportive environments, strengthening community action, and policy and system change.
  • Manage the day-to-day operations of advancing identified core actions of health promotion, evidence-based prevention, and harm reduction, specifically including Education, Promotion, and Outreach (EPO) efforts.
  • Oversee academic partnerships in support of student well-being (e.g., wellness courses and modules)
  • Advance, monitor, and report on university-wide high-risk and harm prevention planning, coordinating the development and implementation of U-M's shared, evidence-based approach to reducing alcohol- and other drug related harm and promoting student and community well-being.
  • Partner with SL data and assessment leads as it relates to prevention/high-risk planning, education, promotion, and outreach.
  • Serve as co-chair or lead member of the Ann Arbor Campus Community Collaborative, leading cross-sector prevention and harm reduction partnerships, membership recruitment, meeting planning, educational outreach, and campus/community engagement.
  • Serve on the Community Accountability and Prevention Law Enforcement Collaborative, as charged by the Associate Vice President for Health and Well-being, ensuring effective coordination and alignment with institutional harm prevention goals.
  • Oversee the biennial review of the University of Michigan Alcohol and Other Drug Policy, coordinating with University Human Resources and campus partners at the direction of the Director of Wolverine Wellness and ensuring regulatory compliance.
  • Provide support and coordination for relevant prevention, education, promotion, and outreach grant initiatives.
  • Coordinate efforts with Health & Wellness partners and Student Life communications teams.

Administrative and Supervision (30%)

  • Supervise professional and student staff
    •  Recruit, hire, train, and provide supervision through multicultural and culturally informed frameworks to Health Promotions professional staff, graduate, and undergraduate student staff.
    • Oversee supervisees  work in providing administrative support to all staff and ensuring a welcoming, inclusive environment for all who are seeking programs and resources at Wolverine Wellness
    • Partner with the Director to provide ongoing professional development opportunities for the whole team, such as WW staff retreats.
    • Provide ongoing training for WW staff on evidence-based prevention, education, promotion, and outreach.
    • Facilitate team meetings and trainings; builds morale and emphasizes teamwork
    • Clearly explain tasks and expectations, conduct ongoing assessment of job performance, and provide feedback to provide high-quality work.
    • Initiate and administer corrective action processes, conflict management tools, and provide coaching, oral and written warnings as needed, and handle employee complaints.
  • Oversee Record Keeping, Assessment, and Budget Management
    • Collect, manage, and report on the data of Prevention, Education, Promotion, and Outreach Efforts
    • Prepare special and periodic reports when requested and as necessary.
    • Review campus climate data regularly, adapting our services, outreach, and training as appropriate
    • Provide assistance in overall departmental budget management
  • Provide coaching and consultation with students that can include mental health and sexual assault crisis intervention and appropriate referral and follow-up (e.g. to the Michigan Medicine Psychiatric ER), in collaboration with clinical staff and other Student Life leadership
  • Assume executive authority for Wolverine Wellness in the absence of the Director and at the Director's request (e.g., representing the Director at divisional and institutional meetings, events, speaking, and/or media engagements for the university or local communities)
  • Serve on Student Life Leadership Assembly Community of Practice
  • Other duties as assigned

Well-being Collective Infrastructure (10%)

  • Directly support the Director and the Well-being Collective Lead with determining long-term goals, assessing and evaluating current resources and initiatives, and providing budget management. Serve on the WBC as part of the backbone infrastructure. 
     

Required Qualifications*

 
  • Master's degree in Public Health, Social Work, Higher Education, or a related field
  • A minimum of eight years of work experience in college health or a related field
  • A minimum of three to four years of professional staff supervision
  • Experience working with large multi-unit initiatives
  • Experience working with health and well-being-related student organizations and/or student engagement initiatives
  • Experience in utilizing a holistic, multidimensional, and inclusive model of well-being
  • Experience with leadership and operational management or core work function

Financial/Budgetary Responsibility:

Financial responsibility includes estimating, authorizing, reconciling, and tracking needs and expenditures related to student engagement and academic partnerships. Help ensure fiscal responsibility and accountability of the unit budget exceeding $1.7 million.

Working Conditions:

Evening and weekend hours are required throughout the academic year. This is a hybrid position with the expectation of at least 3 days in-person per week.

Physical Requirements:

Occasionally transporting items weighing up to twenty-five (25) pounds, etc. 

Direct Reports:

2-4 health promotion specialists; 1 wellness coordinator senior
 

This role may have reporting obligations under Title IX and Clery.

Selected candidates whose start date is 4/1/2026 or after, will not be eligible for the university FY26-27 salary/merit plan unless otherwise notified.
