Job Summary

 

The University of Michigan Department of Environment, Health & Safety is seeking a Public Health Specialist to assist with campus activities including: food service licensing, inspections, and education; public swimming pool licensing and inspections; water quality complaint investigations; communicable disease investigations; and pesticide storage audits.

Responsibilities*

 
  • Inspect establishments and evaluate compliance with public health, safety, environmental regulations, and codes.
  • Advise campus partners on public health issues and steps needed to achieve compliance and mitigate hazards.
  • Investigate and evaluate complaints and public health nuisances.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and county laws, rules, and regulations to protect public health and the environment.
  • Provide public health education to individuals and groups.
  • Prepare and present written reports.

Required Qualifications*

 
  • Bachelor's degree in Public Health, Environmental Health, Biology, Chemistry or a related field
  • 3-5 years experience in environmental or public health health disciplines
  • Valid Michigan Vehicle Operator's License required
  • Knowledge of bacteriology, and chemistry applicable to public health problems
  • Good communication skills
  • Good problem solving skills
  • Attention to detail
  • Adaptability and flexibility
  • Ability to work well in a team environment
