Job Summary

 

The Wolverine Media Network (WMN) is a collective of student-led media organizations, made up of the Michigan Journal, WUMD Campus Radio, the Campus Video Network, and the Lyceum art journal. WMN is seeking a passionate and motivated Advisor for the Michigan Journal. The Michigan Journal is the student-run publication at the University of Michigan-Dearborn and has existed since 1971. The Advisor will report to the Director of Student Life, who is the primary staff advisor to the Wolverine Media Network. In this role, the Advisor will be responsible for mentoring the Michigan Journal's Editorial Team and writers, assisting with the preparation of print and web publications, and guiding on best practices of ethical and thought-provoking student journalism that serves the UM-Dearborn campus community.

Responsibilities*

 

Primary Responsibilities

  • Support the Editor(s) in Chief in reviewing and editing submissions, designing print layout, and publishing online and in print
  • Attend Editorial Team meetings and Wolverine Media Network leadership meetings up to once per week
  • Meet one-on-one with the Editor(s) as needed
  • Advise the Editorial Team and writers on journalistic techniques centered on integral journalism
  • Promote and market the Michigan Journal to the campus community
  • Meet one-on-one with the Director of Student Life biweekly

 General Responsibilities

  • Seek out opportunities for collaboration and maintain working partnerships, both within and outside of the University
  • Establish, achieve, and assess learning outcomes according to University and department priorities and best practices
  • Contribute to an inclusive campus and community environment
  • Contribute actively and collaboratively toward the OSL mission, goals, and priorities
  • Other duties as assigned by the supervisor

Required Qualifications*

 
  • Bachelor's degree in journalism, media production, communication, or related field
  • 1-2 years of relevant experience working in journalism
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Knowledge of practices and tenets of ethical journalism
  • Availability to work periodic evenings and weekends

Desired Qualifications*

 
  • 1-2 years of experience working on a student publication
  • 1-2 years of experience working with students
