Position Responsibilities (primary responsibilities and duties expected in this position totaling 100% allocation):
Laboratory Testing (95%)
- Perform tests in these areas of the laboratory: bacteriology, including organism identification and susceptibility; hematology; urinalysis; molecular; serological; immunological and immunochemical.
- Responsible for day-to-day quality control, calibration, maintenance and troubleshooting of area assignment.
- Consult with clinicians regarding correlation of test results with disease states.
- Prepare cultures, reagents and solutions.
- Assist with inventory of supplies to facilitate maintenance of adequate stocking levels of reagents and equipment to support efficient laboratory operation.
- Participate in Continuing Education activities and proficiency testing.
- Interact with the manufacturer of testing kits and reagents when questions arise regarding the way their tests react or regarding the interpretation of results to determine and report the most accurate results.
- Contact Technical Support when issues arise with instrument functionality, while consulting with or keeping the Laboratory Manager updated.
- Dispose of hazardous materials, including bio-hazards and chemical waste, according to proper protocol and procedures. Review safety manual and other safety materials yearly to perform laboratory procedures safely.
- Participate in Laboratory Quality Improvement activities.
- Practice Universal Precautions and follow all safety standards while working in laboratory.
- Assist in instruction of new employees.
- Write and update procedures.
Phlebotomy/Front Desk/Distribution (5%)
- Prepare specimens for in-house testing and send-out testing to reference laboratories.
- Troubleshooting, when necessary, by collaborating with reference lab staff, UHS clinicians or clericals, or others to ensure that laboratory test results are available in a timely fashion to support the clinicians in the diagnosis of disease.
- Cover the Front Desk area when required, including checking patient in.
- Provide patients with instructions for the preparation and collection of specimens for laboratory testing.
- Data entry to record the tests in the laboratory computer system.
- Answer the telephones and provide support to the clinical areas of UHS.
- Perform phlebotomy duties according to established protocols.
- Other duties as needed.

Physical Requirements:
The Medical Technologist must be able to remain in a stationary position for extended periods of time or move for portions of the workday and be stationary for extended periods during microscope work and instrument operation. Frequent fine motor activity - including pipetting, slide manipulation, and keyboarding - is required. The role requires transporting objects weighing up to 25 pounds, position self to access equipment, and the ability to reach supplies at times above shoulder level. Clear near-vision acuity and sustained visual focus are essential for microscopic examination, slide evaluation, and interpretation of test reactions. Routine exposure to bio-hazardous materials necessitates the use of appropriate PPE.
This role may have reporting obligations under Title IX and Clery.

Selected candidates whose start date is 4/1/2026 or after, will not be eligible for the university FY26-27 salary/merit plan unless otherwise notified.
