Job Summary

The MHealthy Tobacco Consultation Service (TCS) provides comprehensive, evidence-based tobacco treatment to University of Michigan faculty, staff, Michigan Medicine patients, and members of the surrounding community. Reporting to the Wellness Program Manager, Substance Use Education, the TCS Inpatient Health Educator provides in-patient tobacco treatment counseling and support to our Michigan Medicine patients. Beyond direct patient intervention, you will serve as a subject matter expert and advocate, ensuring continuity of care and accurate data tracking. 

Note: This is a 34-hour/week Monday - Friday position. You will work on-site at the University hospital in Ann Arbor, MI on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, and remotely on Wednesday.  The posted salary range reflects is a full-time, 100% position. Responsibilities*

 

Tobacco Treatment Counseling & Education: 70%

  • Provide in-person tobacco treatment counseling and education to Michigan Medicine patients.
  • Develop relapse prevention strategies and  provide ongoing support to patients through follow-up calls or visits to reinforce change.
  • Determine the need for tobacco cessation medications during admission and make recommendations to the patient's care team. 
  • Discuss post-discharge robust quit plans that bridge the gap between hospital and home, and help facilitate patient enrollment in the TCS outpatient program.
  • Maintain clinical integrity and data accuracy to support patient safety and program reporting. 
  • Accurately document outcomes of patient interactions in the electronic medical record and database management systems.
  • Monitor and report on patient progress as requested.
  • Complete a Tobacco Treatment Specialist (TTS) training through an accredited institution within one year of joining our team (unless already completed).

Team Collaboration & Program Development: 30%

  • Serve as a team member in providing consultation and training to hospital units, departments, and external healthcare providers via various modalities including onsite training.
  • Participate on the TCS program team and help shape program priorities by aligning activities with organizational goals, identifying opportunities to grow and improve, and supporting planning and implementation.
  • Engage in needs assessment and program evaluation activities to support program improvement.

Required Qualifications*

 
  • Bachelor's degree in counseling, psychology, social work, nursing, public health/health education or related field. 
  • 1+ years of professional counseling/health education experience. 
  • Knowledge of the principles of health equity, and an understanding of the root causes of health disparities, including social determinants of health.
  • Strong interpersonal, analytical, and communication skills.
  • Previous work experience in a clinic setting or hospital environment.
