The research laboratory of Dr. Anthony Rosenzweig in the Department of Internal Medicine, Division of Cardiovascular Medicine at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI is seeking an experienced mouse surgeon to perform advanced microsurgical procedures for preclinical research. The ideal candidate will establish and maintain complex disease models, including Transverse Aortic Constriction (TAC), Myocardial Infarction (MI), Ischemia-Reperfusion Injury (IRI), Middle Cerebral Artery Occlusion (MCAO), and other stroke or cardiovascular models. The successful candidate will become a critical contributor and collaborator on translational studies uncovering the shared mechanisms driving health and disease in the heart and brain. 

The Rosenzweig Lab is located within the Frankel Institute of Heart and Brain Health at Michigan Medicine?s North Campus Research Complex, a newly renovated facility designed to foster collaboration and innovation. We are seeking candidates with a passion for science with the potential to substantively impact our understanding of health and disease. The successful candidate must have outstanding surgical technique and act as the resident expert in cardiac and brain animal models, providing input into the design and implementation of key in vivo experiments by working in close collaboration with the PI and other lab personnel. This role involves a combination of project consultation planning with lab members, hands-on animal work, care and monitoring of animals post-surgery, and record keeping, all currently conducted under approved research protocols.

• Advanced Microsurgery & Model Development: Perform precise procedures (TAC, MI, IRI, MCAO) and collaborate with the PI and other senior lab personnel to design new research projects and surgical protocols.
• Post-Operative & Specialized Care: Oversee perioperative care, recovery monitoring, and cardiomyocyte isolation from adult/neonatal rodents.
• Lab Leadership & Compliance: Act as the "resident expert," training junior staff, managing SOP development, and ensuring 100% compliance with IACUC guidelines.
• Operations & Data Management: Maintain meticulous surgical records, manage surgical consumables through Quartzy, and contribute to data analysis.
   

Senior Level

• Bachelor's degree
• 5-6 years of related experience including mouse/rat recovery surgeries with strong knowledge of aseptic technique and perioperative care
• Proven experience in rodent microsurgery, specifically TAC, MI, IRI, MCAO, or similar models.
• 4+ years of experience in mouse tissue collection and injections (subcutaneous and intraperitoneal).
• Excellent attention to detail and manual dexterity.
• Familiarity with regulatory requirements for animal research.
• A strong work ethic, great organization, excellent communication skills, and the ability to work effectively in a team environment.
• An advanced understanding and commitment to animal care and management

Intermediate Level

• Bachelor's degree
• 4-5 years experience

Associate Level

• Bachelor's degree
• 1-3 years experience

All levels

• Experience isolating cardiomyocytes from adult and neonatal mouse and rat hearts
• Ability to perform murine echocardiography or a willingness to learn
• Ability to learn new cardiovascular and/or brain models.
• Prior experience in a research-intensive environment.
• Knowledge and experience managing mouse breeding and genotyping
• Experience managing mouse colony with tracking software
• Advanced degree (e.g., DVM, PhD) is helpful but not essential.
   

• This is a full-time position M-F onsite at NCRC with a preferred work schedule of 8:30-4:30pm.
• Flexibility in hours may be arranged in order to be present to complete job responsibilities.
