The laboratory of Dr. Richard Miller in the Department of Pathology is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Research Assistant II (Temporary) to support ongoing research in aging biology, metabolism, and disease-related pathology. This position is well suited for an individual who thrives in a fast-paced laboratory environment and is eager to gain hands-on experience with molecular biology techniques and experimental pathology research. The Research Assistant will work closely with trainees and senior research staff under the direct supervision of the Principal Investigator or designated senior scientists. The candidate will receive thorough training in all laboratory procedures and will contribute to collaborative, hypothesis-driven research projects.

Molecular & Experimental Techniques: Perform routine molecular biology experiments, including RNA extraction, reverse transcription, and quantitative real-time PCR (RT-qPCR). Conduct protein-based assays such as Western blotting and assist with sample preparation for downstream analysis. Support experimental workflows related to aging, metabolism, and pathology-focused studies using murine models.

Pathology & Tissue Handling: Assist with tissue processing, labeling, organization, and storage of biological samples (e.g., frozen tissues, histology slides, and tissue blocks). Support pathology-related workflows and collaborate with pathology personnel as needed. Operate laboratory equipment according to established protocols and standard operating procedures.

Data & Documentation: Maintain accurate and well-organized experimental records, including laboratory notebooks and digital data files. Assist with basic data organization and preparation of results for internal review and discussion.

Laboratory Operations & Safety: Prepare buffers, reagents, and solutions following established protocols. Adhere to laboratory safety regulations and institutional guidelines when working with biological or potentially hazardous materials. Maintain a clean, organized, and functional laboratory workspace.

Collaboration & Communication: Work effectively within a collaborative research team. Participate in lab meetings and provide updates on assigned experiments or tasks.

• Background in cell biology, molecular biology, pathology, or a related biomedical field.
• Hands-on experience or formal training in molecular biology techniques, including RT-qPCR.
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
• Excellent documentation and record-keeping skills.
• Ability to manage multiple tasks and work efficiently in a research setting.
• Strong communication and teamwork skills.
• Willingness to learn and implement new experimental techniques.
• Knowledge of laboratory safety practices.
• High school diploma or Associate?s degree.

• Bachelors degree in biomedical sciences, biology, or a related field.
• Prior experience working in a biomedical research laboratory.
• Experience with animal-based research, protein analysis, or tissue-based assays is a plus.
