Job Summary

 

The Central Staffing Resource (CSR) department is a cornerstone of quality nursing care and operational responsiveness across our health system. CSR provides supplemental staffing support to inpatient and specialty areas across the medical campus, ensuring safe, flexible, and high?quality care delivery. 

We are seeking a dynamic, highly skilled Nursing Supervisor to join our CSR leadership team. This role plays a vital part in supporting nursing and ancillary staff, coordinating real?time staffing operations, and fostering a stable and responsive care environment.

Responsibilities*

 

To assist the Central Staffing Resource (CSR) Nursing Services Senior Director in the planning and management of CSR nursing and patient care services.
To provide leadership in the practice of nursing, emphasizing quality patient care, education and research.
To assist in coordinating patient care services consistent with the University of Michigan Hospital and Health Center mission and goals.
Collaborative/consultative relationship with other health professionals and administrative personnel.
Administrative and functional supervision is exercised over nursing and support staff as delegated by Senior Director.

Responsibilities include:

Personnel Management:
Plan, assign and supervise the work of nursing and support staff.
Participate in interviewing, selecting and orienting nursing and support staff.
Participate in the counseling, coaching, discipline, and evaluation of CSR staff.
Participate in the development, implementation and revision of individual performance plans.
Facilitate open channels of communication with Nursing Directors, Supervisors, peers, staff, and others. 
Coach and mentor nurses, supportive staff, members of the nursing leadership team and others as assigned. 

Anticipate and respond to staff issues and concerns. 

Collaborate with Educational Nurse Coordinator to implement competency-based education. 


Clinical Practice:
Maintain significant presence rounding on CSR staff, patients/families and interfacing with staff to ensure patient care excellence on all shifts.

Management and Collaboration within Clinical Areas:
Participate in the development and implementation of department goals and objectives.

Collaborate with unit leaders to build partnerships, supporting clinical safety/quality initiatives at the unit level.

Participate in the development of department policy/procedure and standards of nursing care. 
Identify and plan for staffing consistent with the needs throughout the system.
Participate in planning and problem solving of daily department operations, priorities of patient services. 
Interpret and implement the Hospital and University policies and procedures and the standards of regulatory agencies.
Participate in the monitoring of Department payroll and commodity expenditures.
Provide input into the payroll and commodity planning process.
Anticipate and respond to patient and family issues and concerns.

Quality Assurance and Research:
Promote the integration of research findings into clinical practice of the unit nursing staff.
Promote staff involvement in clinical research, as applicable.

Use lean management principles to optimize department operations.

Required Qualifications*

 

Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the state of Michigan.

Required Educational Requirements:
Applicant must meet one of the following:
* Bachelors of Science in Nursing OR
* Associates degree or Diploma in Nursing and a Masters degree in Nursing.

  • Minimum five (5) years of experience as a Registered Nurse
  • Minimum two (2) years (within the last five years) RN experience in Adult ICU (critical care) nursing
  • Leadership experience to include; charge nurse, team leader, professional development framework, or other management/supervisory experience.
  • Nurse Leadership certification or completion within two (2) years of accepting this position or when eligible to certify, whichever comes first. Certification is expected to be maintained while in this leadership role. Examples include Certified Nurse Manager and Leader (CNML) or, Nurse Executive (NE-BC). Certifications must be recognized by the Magnet Recognition Program and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC.)

  • Master of Science Nursing.
  • Previous nursing supervisory experience
  • Knowledge of the Michigan Medicine policies and practices.
  • Consultative and teaching skills.
  • Demonstrated excellent interpersonal and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrative ability to be effective, positive change agent. 
  • Demonstrate flexibility related to unit staffing and patient care needs. 
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with Administrators, Clinical Nursing Directors, Physicians, Peers, Subordinates, and other Michigan Medicine departments and groups. 
  • Evidence of ability to assess, interpret, and analyze clinical information independently and collaboratively. 
  • Computer competency including Word, Excel, and be able to extract data from University supported computer databases. 
  • Demonstrated understanding and support of patient and family-centered care. 
  • Committee Membership experience.  

Work Schedule

 

Hours/Week: 40 hours
Shift: Primarily day shift with flexibility based on department needs. 

Location: Med Inn-CSR, Central Staffing Resource
