Duties:
The Clinical Nursing Director (CND) will plan and manage the clinical and administrative operations of the intra-hospital transport team. SWAT comprises RNs, paramedics, and administrative staff, providing transport of moderate and high-risk patients to temporary procedural areas throughout the medical complex, including University Hospital, University Hospital South, Children's and Women's Hospital (C&W), The Rogel Cancer Center, Cardiovascular Center, Taubman Center, and the Pavilion. SWAT also provides moderate sedation to patients in procedure areas and at the bedside, for both adult and pediatric patients. The paramedic team also responds to medical events involving outpatients, visitors, family, and staff throughout the above buildings, the attached parking structures, and the courtyard. The CND assures implementation of patient care and quality assurance standards; plans, organizes, and evaluates clinical practice and educational activities. The CND works closely with the MPLAN Medical Director to create and support an environment that delivers cutting-edge, innovative care to an ever-growing number of intra-hospital patients.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Develop and implement unit goals and objectives, which include the establishment of standards of practice in patient care consistent with national professional and regulatory guidelines.
- Integrate unit goals and objectives with Nursing Service goals and objectives. Advise and assist with establishing priorities and developing institutional programs.
- Work closely with medical staff and other disciplines for the successful implementation of patient, unit, and institutional objectives. Assist in the resolution of interdisciplinary operating problems.
- Supervise operations of the unit. Establish minimum/maximum staffing patterns to ensure quality patient care. Initiate and implement a staffing schedule that meets the needs of patient volume and acuity.
- Identify and recommend specific staffing needs and position qualifications consistent with the respective unit objectives and patient case mix.
- Interview and select qualified personnel.
- Evaluate the performance of nursing staff responsible for the patient care unit. Guide nursing and paramedic staff to enable achievement of unit and institutional objectives, particularly as related to high-quality patient care.
- Interpret and implement University and hospital personnel policies and programs, and ensure their uniform and correct application.
- Project and monitor personnel budget for patient care unit. Provide information regarding budget variances to the ACNO.
- Collaborate and coordinate with other disciplines to plan, evaluate, and implement the commodity budget for the patient care unit.
- Initiate and implement in-service guidelines for unit-level orientation and staff development. Encourage and provide opportunities for continuing education of the nursing staff.
- Initiate, plan, analyze, and participate in Nursing staff development programs and workshops.
- Ensures ongoing competency assessment occurs; provides educational experience for nursing and paramedic staff, as required to maintain clinical standards.
Reporting Relationship: The Clinical Nursing Director reports to the Emergency, Psychiatry, and Surgical Services Associate Chief Nursing Officer (ACNO).
