The MHED Program is designed to serve as a catalyst for institutional change to ensure an enduring, measurable increase in the enrollment, completion, certification and placement rate of individuals who would otherwise not adequately be represented as teaching professionals in Michigan's K-12 classrooms.

MI GEAR UP is a federally-funded program from the United States Department of Education designed to increase the number of economically-disadvantaged high school students who are prepared to enter postsecondary education.

This is a grant-funded position. This position is term limited and will start with a one-semester term with the option for renewal. Student team members may be asked to perform the following tasks.

Event and Program Planning

• Support all logistical aspects of event planning such as effective tracking of attendees, venue confirmation, assist with flyer and brochure creation, key equipment reservation, presenter confirmation, and securing vendors.
• Consult with leadership to ensure all event/program logistics are meeting program standards and expectations.
• Carry out all programming and services and ensure responsibility for set up and close out of events throughout pre-during-post stages.
• Support event/program execution in alignment with intended impact through comprehensive topic research, audience appropriate tailoring, clear objectives, and opportunities to reinforce knowledge and assess its effectiveness.
• Assess the quality of programs and events, document attendance, and feedback.

Welcome Desk Coverage (as necessary)

• Remain up-to-date with all communications across the office ranging from front desk coverage, program calendars (e-version and physical boards), and daily front desk procedures.
• Answer, transfer, and provide high-quality reception services to departmental guest seeking to contact staff members or clarify details about any programs or events.
• Ensure front desk equipment and resources are stocked daily and relay key updates to the a "Front Office Student Coordinator" and/or staff throughout their shift.
   

Data Management Assistance

• Ensure all proper documentation is accounted for during all events such as presentation handouts, assessment forms, etc. and process all documents as part of office records.
• Support up-to-date management of student files by effectively and efficiently collecting, filing, and sorting key program documents.
• Provide support to staff to compile or dispose of student files.
• Work with the database management staff to ensure that all files are properly maintained and stored.

Outreach

• Represent the program at internal and external community spaces to provide awareness of the mission, programs, and goals of the program(s)
• Support all program recruitment efforts, community service, and university events.
• Occupy external partner as needed (e.g. Beecher and Hamady High Schools/ UM-Flint Education Dept-KCP MHED office)

Data and Assessment

• Identify missing data and follow through with collection and/or clarifications.
• Routinely collect data to provide to the database management staff member.
• Communicate with database management staff member for tasks involving data collection, entry, and assessment.

Student/ Peer Mentoring

• Engage program participants though an individualized, holistic, coaching/mentoring model as needed (GEAR UP High school students)
• Compile campus and community resources to effectively respond to program participant needs.
• Work and communicate with designated staff member to update and provide information regarding peer interactions.

• Currently enrolled at UM-Flint with 55+ credit hrs.
• Minimum Cumulative GPA of a 2.75 
• Adequate computer and writing skills
• Must exercise a strengths-based approach in being sensitive, respectful, and understanding of the needs of economically and academically disadvantaged as well as ethnically diverse students
• Ability to think critically and problem solve swiftly and responsibly
• Maintain a professional appearance and character

Prior experience working with students linked to college motivation, confidence building, and postsecondary success

Onsite
The work requires, or the supervisor approves a fully onsite presence.  Onsite is defined as a designated U-M owned or leased work location within or outside of the State of Michigan
