Job Summary

 

The University of Michigan School of Public Health is seeking a temporary Instructional Designer to support the transition of courses from the Coursera platform to the Canvas Learning Management System (LMS). This role will focus on rebuilding and improving online course sites in Canvas, remediating accessibility issues, and providing additional instructional design support as needed. The position is well suited to a mid-level instructional designer who can work independently with minimal supervision and demonstrates strong attention to detail.

The Instructional Designer (Temp) will join the School of Public Health's Instructional Services team and report to the Assistant Director of Instructional Services. The role involves close collaboration with instructional designers, media services staff, and faculty. This temporary position will end on 06/30/2026 and may have the possibility of extension if funding allows.

Responsibilities*

 
  • Transfer and rebuild course content from Coursera into Canvas, ensuring accuracy, consistency, and instructional quality
  • Design and structure Canvas course sites using established instructional design and online learning best practices
  • Review and remediate course materials for digital accessibility, including applying WCAG/ADA-aligned practices
  • Identify and resolve accessibility issues in documents, media, and LMS content
  • Collaborate with the Instructional Services team members, media services, and faculty on course development and updates
  • Work with faculty to develop timelines and guidance for various phases of course development, revision, or enhancement
  • Provide other instructional design support as needed, based on project priorities

Required Qualifications*

 
  • Master's degree in instructional design, education, educational technology, or a related field
  • Experience working in higher education instructional design
  • Demonstrated experience building and supporting courses in Canvas
  • Experience with accessibility remediation and a working knowledge of digital accessibility requirements (e.g., WCAG, ADA)
  • Ability to work independently, manage multiple tasks, and meet deadlines with minimal supervision
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills

Desired Qualifications*

 
  • Experience migrating courses between learning management systems
  • Familiarity with large-scale online or hybrid course development
  • Experience collaborating with faculty and cross-functional instructional support teams

Modes of Work

 

Positions that are eligible for hybrid or mobile/remote work mode are at the discretion of the hiring department. Work agreements are reviewed annually at a minimum and are subject to change at any time, and for any reason, throughout the course of employment. Learn more about the work modes.

After an initial period of on-site orientation, it is expected that this position will work on-site 3 days per week and from home 2 days per week. This baseline expectation can be adjusted proportionately to accommodate a part-time schedule.
