University Unions drives community building and belonging through the integration of its three student union facilities (Michigan Union, Michigan League, Pierpont Commons), Center for Campus Involvement, Campus Information, meeting/event spaces, retail food, bookstore and other services to support student success. UU works in close partnership with Palmer Commons, an academic meeting facility, Conferences & Event Services and Michigan Dining to provide student-focused and customer-oriented service to the campus.

Position Summary:

The Major Events Manager provides essential leadership of major event operations. You will have broad leadership within established guidelines and will provide clients with a holistic approach to event planning. You and your colleagues will facilitate nearly 350 events in the on-campus performance venues.  You will both directly and indirectly supervise support and student staff. You will report to the Lead Manager for Major Events and Ticketing in the Center for Campus Involvement.
 

Management of Event Operations (80%)

• Manage and advise student organizations hosting events in the major performance venues including Hill Auditorium (3500 Seats), the Power Center for the Performing Arts (1300 seats), Rackham Auditorium (1000 seats), Lydia Mendelssohn Theatre (620 seats), and Arthur Miller Theater (200 seats).
• Manage and facilitate assigned major events in major campus venues hosted by U-M departments and non-university clients.
• Design, plan, and manage all technical and physical production aspects including the production schedule and coordinate the activities of all staff associated with shows (technical supervisor, ushers, IATSE stagehands, box office staff, etc.).
• Negotiate the physical layout of production while maintaining responsibility for the facility.
• Work in close partnership with the Michigan Union Ticket Office (MUTO) Manager, who also reports to the Lead Manager for Major Events and Ticketing.
• Attend and manage events from start to finish.

Financial (15%)

• Accountable for creation and execution of event budgets and estimates.
• Process settlements following each event.
• Authorize payments for materials, services, and other event related expenses.
• Reconcile P-card statements on a monthly basis.

University Unions and Student Life Service (5%)

• As a member of the Center for Campus Involvement, University Unions, and the Division of Student Life, serve on various committees and work teams as requested.
• Build and maintain relationships with other University and Student Life departments, including, but not limited to, University Productions, Division of Public Safety & Security, Facilities & Operations, and University Musical Society.
• Attend and participate in staff training and professional development opportunities.
• Other Duties as Assigned.

• Bachelor's Degree or equivalent combination of education and experience
• Minimum 2 years of event management experience as a student or professional
   

• Master's degree in Student Affairs/College Personnel, Performing Arts, Theater Management or similar
• 5 years or more of professional experiences (including graduate program work experience)
• Experience with college student activities or events

Financial/Budgetary Responsibility:

• This position oversees and manages event budgets and accounts for each event, including the creation of estimates and initial settlements for each event. Responsible for revenue generation of approximately $100,000 annually.

Working Conditions:

• The position requires flexible work hours, and an individual who is able to work frequent evenings and weekends. The successful candidate must be able to work in a collaborative environment, but also work independently and make good decisions that reflect University and Student Life policies, procedures, and philosophies.

Physical Requirements:

• Routinely moves items weighing up to twenty-five (25) pounds.

Direct Reports:

• Serve as the direct supervisor to one graduate student.
