Responsibilities*

 

The Section of General Surgery is seeking a certified Advanced Practice Professional (APP) to join a busy, collegial clinical group in the Department of Surgery.

The APP will participate in all out-patient clinical activities of the Division of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, including the pre-operative and post-operative evaluation and longitudinal care of patients with benign or malignant oral and maxillofacial conditions such as TMJ, osteoarthritis, oromandibular dystonia or myofascial pain. The APP will work collaboratively with Division faculty to ensure timely patient access and maintain the highest standards of patient care. Specifically, the APP will: (i) conduct initial evaluations of patients; (ii) provide clinical follow-up for patients with benign or malignant oral and maxillofacial conditions; (iii) provide out-patient post-operative care; and (iv) perform minor clinic-based procedures such as placement/removal of MMF screws, Injections (TMJ, Trigger Point, Neurotoxin, etc), application of transcutaneous nerve stimulation, or U/S therapy.

The APP will conduct independent visits in person and virtually. Specific education and hands-on training tailored to the candidate?s previous experience will be provided by surgical attending Physicians and APPs in the Division.

In consultation with attending surgeons, the APP will also:

  • Interview patients to obtain a detailed patient history
  • Perform and document physical examinations by compiling and recording detailed narrative evaluations/dictations
  • Perform various diagnostic, therapeutic and minor surgical procedures in clinic  Order and interpret diagnostic testing and imaging
  • Act as a patient liaison before and after surgery(s) to provide information and coordinate care
  • Independently conduct out-patient evaluations of selected patients   Independently provide follow-up care of selected patients
  • Provides independent routine Oral & Maxillofacial services effectively and efficiently   Communicate and coordinate care with referring and consultant physicians
  • Make appropriate referrals to internal and external providers and facilities
  • Returns phone calls and portal messages from patients through MiChart/EPIC
  • Order and prescribe of medications, including refills, in accordance with statutes, rules, and regulations of the State of Michigan
  • Works closely with the faculty to design and execute research protocols and with the publication of potential results to improve the care of patients
  • Aids with the development of needed patient care literature. Supports the development of educational curriculum for staff and/or patients. Acts as a consultant for inpatient and out- patient staff and community members. Participate in student, physician, and staff education
  • Works with the staff in the coordination of the Oral & Maxillofacial clinic patient needs  Organizes patient programs

Required Qualifications*

 

NP:

  • Current licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse and Nurse Practitioner specialty certification in the State of Michigan
  • Current specialty certification to practice as a Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) or dual- boarded as an Adult-Gerontology Nurse Practitioner (Primary or Acute).
  • Graduate of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program
  • Certification as a Nurse Practitioner recognized by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN)
  • Current DEA registration
  • AHA approved BLS 
  • Two (2) or more years, within the past four (4) years, direct patient care experience working with adult surgery population
     


PA:

  • Satisfactory completion of a Physician Assistant program accredited by Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) or one of its predecessor agencies, CAHEA or CAAHEP.
  • Certification by the National Commission on Certification for Physician Assistants (NCCPA).
  • Current license to practice as a Physician Assistant in the State of Michigan.
  • State of Michigan Controlled Substance License Required 
  • Current DEA registration 
  • AHA approved BLS
  • Two (2) or more years, within the past four (4) years, direct patient care experience working with adult surgery population

Desired Qualifications*

 
  • Two (2) or more years, within the past four (4) years, direct patient care experience as an NP, with adult patients in an inpatient or outpatient setting
  • Two (2) or more years, within the past four (4) years, direct patient care experience as an NP, with adult oral surgery patients
  • One (1) year of direct patient care experience working with pediatric surgery population  Experience working in the ambulatory care setting
  • Demonstrated active participation in professional development and research
     

Work Schedule

 

Hours/Week: 40 per week

Shift/Hours/Days: Day shift Monday through Friday; hours and days variable to meet clinic needs.

Location: Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Clinics; primarily based at the Main University Hospital (Med Inn and Von Voigtlander). Potential to travel to offsite clinics to provide coverage with expansion of the service line. Must have own transportation.

All new employees will be expected to float to a designated unit(s) in times of low census.
