Job Summary

 

The Department of Pathology is seeking a detail-oriented and experienced individual to join its team as a Medical Coder ? Outpatient (Non-Certified). This role focuses on coding and billing functions for outpatient and inpatient pathology services, requiring a strong set of skills, proficiency in medical terminology, and the ability to adapt to meet departmental needs. This position also involves the complex task of handling prior authorizations for high-level Molecular Testing. The role includes a variety of complex tasks and may serve as a resource for resolving coding and billing issues. Work is performed under general supervision.

Responsibilities*

 
  • Accurately code surgical procedures and diagnoses using ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS coding systems to ensure proper billing and reimbursement.
  • Review and interpret clinical documentation to ensure appropriate code selection and compliance with regulatory standards.
  • Collaborate with pathologists and medical staff for clarification and completeness of coding information.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of coding guidelines, regulations, and industry best practices through ongoing education and training.
  • Assist in auditing and reviewing patient records for accuracy and compliance with coding and billing requirements.
  • Ensure prompt and accurate submission of coded surgical data for billing and reimbursement purposes.
  • Handle confidential patient information with the utmost discretion and integrity, following all HIPAA guidelines.
  • Handle prior authorizations for high-level Molecular Testing, ensuring all necessary documentation and approvals are obtained.
  • Register patients to enable billing for M-Lab clients and external consultants.
  • Assign correct insurance information using the current billing/registration system.
  • Respond promptly and professionally to internal and external inquiries via email and phone.
  • Provide clear written communication and problem-solving support to customers and stakeholders.
  • Perform additional job-related tasks as needed to support departmental operations.

Required Qualifications*

 

In order to be considered for this position the applicant must have met or will have met all the required qualifications prior to the start date of employment.

  • Extensive knowledge of ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS coding systems.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in medical coding, billing, and patient registration.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience handling prior authorizations.
  • Strong understanding of medical terminology, anatomy, and surgical procedures.
  • Excellent attention to detail and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficient in using electronic health records (EHR) and coding software systems.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work collaboratively with healthcare professionals.
  • Commitment to maintaining patient confidentiality and data security.
  • Solid knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, treatment methods, patient care assessment, data collection techniques, and coding classification systems.

Desired Qualifications*

 
  • CPC (Certified Professional Coder) or RHIT (Registered Health Information Technician) certification.
  • Previous experience in pathology coding.
  • Familiarity with MiChart (Epic) electronic health record system.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel.

Work Schedule

 

This full time, 40 hour position is M-F, hours within those days are flexible.

Additional Information

 

This position is fully remote. The employee is responsible for providing appropriate network access and a suitable workspace for offsite work.

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours, and other terms and conditions of employment.

Background Screening

 

Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings.  Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
