Job Summary

 

We are looking for an innovative and driven individual to join the Michigan Hospital Medicine Safety Consortium (HMS) leadership team (60%) and the Divisions of Hospital Medicine and Pulmonary & Critical Care (40%) as Statistician & Analyst Lead. 

The Michigan Hospital Medicine Safety Consortium (HMS) is a Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan and Blue Care Network funded Collaborative Quality Initiative. We are a data-driven collaborative made up of hospitals across the State of Michigan with a goal of improving the quality of care for hospitalized medical patients. As a part of the HMS Coordinating Center, you will collaborate with a dynamic team, including 2 data analysts and three statisticians, and will report to the HMS Program Manager. HMS currently has 68 hospitals/program participants with potential for future expansion. 

The Divisions of Hospital Medicine and Pulmonary & Critical Care are seeking a 40% FTE statistician to support Dr. Hallie Prescott and Dr. Liz Viglianti, health services researchers at Michigan Medicine. Their research focuses on the care of patients with critical illness, including sepsis.

Responsibilities*

 
  • Supervise and coordinate the daily work of data analysts and statisticians, ensuring timely and high-quality deliverables.
  • Recruit, interview, select team members, and lead the orientation process for new hires.
  • Mentor and develop a high-performing team by implementing individualized performance plans and fostering professional growth through regular coaching, evaluation, and feedback.
  • Oversee the development and enforcement of robust data management standards and scalable analytics platforms, maintaining high data quality, accuracy, and consistency.
  • Develop standard operating procedures and best practices for research analyses, including epidemiologic and observational causal inference studies
  • Assist with manuscript preparation, grant preparation, and dissemination of research findings
  • Guide the team in designing, developing, and maintaining custom applications, dashboards, and reporting solutions to meet evolving organizational needs.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert on data collection, statistical modeling and related technical processes, providing expert guidance and support to both the team and stakeholders.
  • Facilitate open communication channels with managers, peers, staff, and physicians to promote collaboration and information sharing.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders across the organization, translating complex statistical findings into actionable insights to support evidence-based decision-making.
  • Lead regular team and collaborative meetings, communicate operational needs effectively, and actively contribute to quality improvement initiatives.
  • Champion a culture of continuous improvement, innovation, and collaboration within the team and across functional areas.
  • Design, conduct, and interpret advanced statistical analyses using datasets relevant to the research or operational goals of the department.
  • Apply appropriate statistical methodologies to evaluate hypotheses, assess outcomes, and support decision-making.
  • Develop and maintain statistical models to identify trends, patterns, and relationships within complex data.
  • Prepare comprehensive reports and visualizations summarizing key statistical findings for stakeholders and publication. 
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications*

 
  • Masters degree in a quantitative discipline, such as Statistics, Biostatistics, Public Health, Computer Science, Informatics, or a related field. 
  • At least 10 years of relevant professional experience.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of supervisory experience, with a demonstrated ability to lead technical teams including analysts and developers and manage complex, cross-functional projects.
  • Proficiency in multiple statistical programming languages such as SAS, STATA, Python, and R, with extensive experience in maintaining large and complex datasets.
  • Experience with version control systems (e.g., GIT, Subversion) and creating advanced SQL queries.
  • Skilled in preparing, maintaining, and leading the development of technical documentation for data and analysis files.
  • Expertise in master data management, data governance, data security, and analytics tools such as Tableau or Power BI.
  • Proven track record of success in collaborative, team-oriented environments.
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and leadership skills.
  • Willingness to travel within Michigan 2-3 times per year for collaborative meetings. 

Desired Qualifications*

 
  • PhD in a quantitative discipline, such as Statistics, Biostatistics, Public Health, Computer Science, Informatics, or a related field.
  • Experience with applied analysis of health data.
  • Experience with health services research leveraging multi-hospital data
  • Experience in healthcare quality improvement.
  • Experience with publishing research in top-tier medical journals, including responding to reviewer comments.

Work Schedule

 

This is a full-time position (40 hours/week) typically scheduled Monday-Friday.

Work Locations

 

The role is hybrid, requiring in-office presence in Ann Arbor one or more days per week.

Background Screening
