The Library Safety Coordinator manages the safety program of the University Library. University Library facilities are open to students, faculty, staff, and the broader community, and require a nuanced and coordinated approach engaging with a high volume of users. The Library works to create inclusive and welcoming spaces and services. Workplace safety needs include de-escalation and a focus on inclusive approaches to upholding library policies.

As the Library Safety Coordinator, you will collaborate with multiple partners to deliver a safety training program that includes programs for public interaction. You will also oversee multiple security measures in the Library, including scheduling card reader access. As part of the Library Facilities team, you will also assist with addressing maintenance needs and onsite support of maintenance issues. You will report to the Director of Facilities.

What You'll Do

 
  • Maintain a curriculum map supporting current employee safety training needs for Library employee workforce.
  • Design lesson plans or identify external training resources to support safety learning outcomes.
  • Conduct employee training programs both onsite and virtually in topics including accident and fire prevention, de-escalation, emergency response, incident reporting, and other safety topics.
  • Lead the Building Incident Response Team, including documentation and training.
  • Coordinate life safety, drills, and inspections through the University of Michigan Fire Safety group.
  • Perform a walkthrough of our buildings to detect any existing life safety hazards and recommend corrective action.
  • Administratively oversee Guest Service Specialist (GSS) program at the Library.
  • Coordinate with Circulation, Access Services, and Divisional Libraries (CASDL) managers to identify both regular and intermittent schedule needs and liaise with Department of Public Safety and Security (DPSS) to request scheduled staff.
  • Provide guidance on current technology security measures, and as they emerge
  • Provide onsite assistance for any maintenance issues.

Required Qualifications*

 
  • Bachelor's degree in environmental safety, social services, or related field or equivalent experience.
  • Two or more years of professional experience in employee safety.
  • Two or more years of professional experience designing employee training curriculum and conducting training programs.
  • One or more years of experience in project management.

Desired Qualifications*

 
  • Working knowledge of principles of de-escalation and mediation methods and training
  • Working knowledge of principles of safety and security in public spaces
  • Working knowledge of public and/or community-based resources, including libraries, job centers, shelters, health care, or human services.

This role occasionally moves through the building and ascends/descends flights of stairs to different floors.
