Job Summary

 

The Kelsey Museum of Archaeology at the University of Michigan has a University Programs Manager that will promote student learning on a range of topics pertaining to the practice of archaeology and the ancient peoples of the Mediterranean, Middle East, and North Africa. The position manages all aspects (design, logistics, delivery) of the Kelsey Museum's University Programs, serving nearly 4,000 U-M undergraduates annually, fulfilling a core portion of the museum's mission and continuing the central goal for which the museum was founded a century ago. Responsibilities of the position include:

Responsibilities*

 

40% Program development and assessment-

  • Ensures alignment of university programs with mission, vision, values and strategic plan
  • Utilizes creativity, resourcefulness and out-of-the-box approaches to design
  • Schedules approximately 100 course visits per semester
  • Liaise with faculty to customize gallery tours, hands-on activities, and/or object handling appropriate for course subject/materials
  • Coordinates with museum collections and conservation staff to develop object lists for object handling
  • Research themes and/or objects for university class visits
  • Develops, deploys, and evaluates engagement and effectiveness surveys for university programs

30% Program delivery-

  • Leads gallery tours to diverse range of university courses (requires sophisticated knowledge of the ancient world, archaeology and museums)
  • Designs and delivers hands-on activities and object handling sessions for a wide variety of university classes

20% Personnel supervision-

  • Responsible for training, leading and supervising 5-8 undergraduate employees, interns, and volunteer docents in delivery of gallery tours
  • Create program schedules and budgets, tracking deadlines and expenses, to ensure programs are delivered on time 
  • Mentoring undergraduate and graduate students in object-based learning and museum education

10% Other duties, including-

  • Building and maintaining partnerships with other College and University units
  • Working collaboratively with K-12 and Community Education programs and staff
  • Managing the museum's Student Activities Board
  • Maintains knowledge of best practices in museum education, public archaeology, and relevant work of archaeological colleagues at U-M
  • Serves on campus committees as a representative of the Kelsey Museum as needed

     

 

Required Qualifications*

 

Experience and knowledge: 

  • Subject matter expertise of archaeology and the ancient peoples of the Mediterranean, Middle East, and/or North Africa, with focus on specific class(es) of material culture;
  • A minimum of 3 years of experience developing lesson plans/curricula at the university level;
  • A minimum of 5 years of teaching at the university level;
  • A minimum of 2 years of designing and delivering object based education to university students in a museum setting;
  • Demonstrated ability to make connections between modern and contemporary world and to illustrate value of museums, artifacts, and archaeology to diverse audiences,
  • Expertise with museum database systems;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of museum best practices, including the safe handling of archaeological objects in a museum setting;
  • Excellent communication (speaking, writing, presentation, and listening) skills and an ability to effectively communicate within all levels of the University, as well as with external audiences;
  • Self-directed and motivated;
  • Able to thrive in a fast-paced environment; 
  • Collaborative by nature, flexible, and resourceful;
  • Ability to interpret the collection and to communicate knowledge about it in a manner relevant to distinct audiences;
  • Ability to engage and interpret scholarly research in the fields of museum and art education or informal learning; 
  • Demonstrated organizational planning, problem-solving, and collaboration.

Desired Qualifications*

 
  • 5 years of experience developing lesson plans/curricula at the university level;
  • 8 years of teaching at the university level;
  • Additional graduate training/degree in second relevant area of study (ancient Mediterranean archaeology, art history);
  • Familiarity and experience with relevant U-M systems (purchasing, course scheduling, etc.);
  • Subject matter expertise of ancient numismatics and/or ancient Mediterranean ceramics;
  • Track record of successful museum program development;
  • Ability to conduct research and draft content;
  • Experience writing program material appropriate for diverse university audience;
  • Successful record of docent training and program delivery;
  • Cultural sensitivity and diplomacy, emotional intelligence, and commitment to the highest standards of professionalism;
  • Professional and personal integrity, self-awareness, and optimism;
  • Experience working in higher education/university museums.
     

Modes of Work

Additional Information

 

The salary range for this position is $54,000 to $70,000.  Please note a higher salary may be offered based on the selected candidate's experience.
