Job Summary

 

The Assistant Dean is responsible for creating and implementing a vision, strategic direction and oversight for student conduct, crisis and emergency services and the functions of the campus basic needs hub. Through these areas the Assistant Dean will provide activities and programs that help cultivate a safe campus community grounded in student involvement, learning, and personal development for a diverse group of learners. The Assistant Dean will be expected to work with colleagues to create programs and services that reinforces UM-Flint's commitment to inclusion. The Assistant Dean reports directly to the Associate Vice Chancellor & Dean of Students and will assist with policies, standards, and goals for the department which are consistent with the mission and goals of the University and the Division of Student Affairs.

Responsibilities*

 

Student Conduct

  • Coordinate all aspects of the University's community standards and student conduct process as guided through the Code of Student Conduct. 
  • Ensure timely response to complaints through student correspondence, conducting investigations, and overseeing all aspects of both formal and informal hearing processes. 
  • Recruit, select and train formal hearing board members. 
  • Process cases and maintain appropriate case files and student records utilizing Maxient software. 
  • Ensure student conduct process complies with federal and state laws including ensuring due process. 
  • Oversee referral of student matters to the Equity, Civil Rights & Title IX office and remain informed on outcomes.
  • Serve as campus sanctioning agent as outlined in the procedures for the Sexual Misconduct Policy.

Student Support

  • Serve as a core member of the campus CARE team and provide case management to assigned students.
  • Oversee case manager training tools including the in-take process and manuals.
  • Oversee all aspects of the Wolverine Essentials Basic Need Hub including, but not limited to, daily operations, inventory, volunteers, donations, appointments, marketing, SNAP/additional resources, and administrative duties.

Supervision

  • Supervise the Wolverine Essentials Case Manager, Basic Needs Coordinator, Administrative Assistants and temporary personnel. This includes recruitment, hiring, training, daily supervision and assessment of job performance. 
  • Provide functional supervision for 3-5 residential level hearing officers and Housing & Residential Life CARE team case managers.
  • Directly supervise 2-3 university level hearing officers.

Administrative

  • Oversee all administrative functions of the department.
  • Assist with department budget development and maintain fiscal responsibility with assigned budgets.
  • Maintain student conduct, CARE team and Wolverine Essentials statistics in alignment with department assessment plan and grant reporting requirements.  
  • Research and apply for related grants. Manage grant funding and related assessment for documentation/grant reporting requirements. 
  • Serve as the primary user of Maxient managing system updates, user access and records for student conduct, CARE, ODOS intake, Title IX, and Clery.
  • Represent the Office of the Dean of Students on related university committees. 
  • Serve as a mandatory reporter (Clery Act) and responsible employee (Title IX).
  • The Office of the Dean of Students is a versatile work environment that encompasses a myriad of  responsibilities. Other duties not outlined in this job description may be assigned as needed.

Required Qualifications*

 
  • Master's degree 
  • 5 or more years of experience directly related to the job responsibilities
  • Knowledge of federal laws, including FERPA, Title IX, and ADA and best practices in student conduct in higher education

Desired Qualifications*

 
  • Demonstrated experience working with student conduct in a higher education setting
  • Experience managing campus crisis and/or meeting the basic needs of students
  • Demonstrated experience in problem-solving, mediation and conflict mediation 
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including the ability to communicate effectively in a culturally informed manner with both individuals and groups from diverse backgrounds.

Modes of Work

 

Hybrid:

The work requirements allow both onsite and offsite work and an employee has an expected recurring onsite presence. On occasion, the employee may be required and must be available to work onsite more frequently if necessitated by unit leadership or their designee and/or the job requirements.

Positions that are eligible for hybrid or mobile/remote work mode are at the discretion of the hiring department.  Work agreements are reviewed annually at a minimum and are subject to change at any time, and for any reason, throughout the course of employment.
