12 East is a 32-bed Pediatric Medical-Surgical Unit that provides care to patients ranging from infants to young adults. The primary services include GI, pulmonary, pediatric surgery, OTO, plastics, general pediatrics, and neonate graduates. 

The Clinical Nursing Director will plan and manage the clinical and administrative operations of a 32-bed Pediatric Medical-Surgical unit responsible for the following: assuring implementation of patient care and quality assurance standards; plans, organizes and evaluates clinical practice and educational activities; participates in planning, development, and implementation of unit policies, goals and objectives and standards of nursing practice. Counsels and evaluates the performance and clinical practice of the nursing staff. 

This includes staff development programs and unit orientation to ensure compliance with practice standards. Identifies and resolves unit operational problems. Represents the unit on the assigned clinical area and hospital committees. Maintains compliance with Federal and State regulations regarding safety and patient care. Actively collaborates in the development of annual budgets; manages and provides variance reporting of activity, payroll, commodity, & capital budgets; participates in new program development & implementation; works closely with the Medical Director and Associate Chief Nursing Officer (ACNO) to create and support an environment where cutting-edge and innovative care is provided to a growing number of Pediatric Medical-Surgical patients.

• Develop and implement unit goals and objectives, which include the establishment of standards of practice in patient care consistent with national professional and regulatory guidelines.
• Integrate unit goals and objectives with Nursing Service goals and objectives. Advise and assist with the establishment of priorities and institutional program development.
• Work closely with medical staff and other disciplines for the successful implementation of patient, unit, and institutional objectives. Assist in the resolution of interdisciplinary operating problems.

• Evaluate the performance of nursing staff responsible for unit patient care.  Make recommendations for merit awards and personnel classification changes. Counsel and discipline nursing staff to enable achievement of unit and institutional objectives, particularly as related to high-quality patient care.
• Interpret and implement university and hospital personnel policies and programs and ensure their uniform and correct application.
• Project and monitor personnel budget for the patient care unit. Provide information regarding budget variances to Associate Chief Nursing Officer. 
• Collaborate and coordinate with other disciplines to plan, evaluate, and implement the commodity budget for the patient care unit.
• Collaborate with the Clinical Nurse Specialist to initiate and implement inservice guidelines for unit-level orientation and staff development. Encourage and provide opportunities for continuing education of the nursing staff.
• Initiate, plan, analyze, and participate in Nursing staff development programs and workshops.
• Participate in a concurrent and retrospective evaluation of patient care consistent with the hospital quality improvement program. Through this review process, evaluate and recommend changes and improvements in areas affecting the quality of patient care, in keeping with regulatory standards.
• Establish guidelines with the nursing faculty, which support the institutional goal of providing the primary clinical environment for nursing students. Facilitate, coordinate, and monitor the clinical experience of nursing and other students.
• Initiate and cooperate in applied research in health care in keeping with the institutional objectives of maintaining prominence in developing new modes of evidenced-based clinical practice.
• Formulate personal, professional goals and prepare written annual self-evaluation for the Associate Chief Nursing Officer. 
• Utilize both leadership and management skills, including personnel management and the ability to perform as a role model for nursing staff.
• Utilize excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Collaborate in a manner that fosters teambuilding and to provide visionary direction for team members.  
• Work effectively with administrators, physicians, peers, and subordinates.

Reporting Relationship: The 12-East Clinical Nursing Director reports to the Associate Chief Nursing Officer for C.S. Mott Children?s Hospital.

• Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the state of Michigan. 
• Required educational requirement:
  • Master?s degree in Nursing or Health Care Administration, Public Health, Business or related field (a Juris Doctor degree may be considered) 
  • If Master?s degree is not in Nursing, a Bachelor?s degree in Nursing is required 
• Two (2) years recent leadership experience, to include demonstrated leadership, management, communication, counseling, problem solving, decision making, conflict resolution and group process skills
• Minimum of five (5) years of nursing experience with demonstration of progressive clinical competence. 
• Nurse Leadership certification or completion of a nursing leadership certification within one (1) year of accepting this position or when eligible to certify, whichever comes first. Certification is expected to be maintained while in this leadership role. Examples include Certified Nursing Manager and Leader (CNML) or, Nurse Executive (NE-BC). • Two (2) years in last three (3) years of supervisory experience in medical and/or surgical pediatric settings. 
• Minimum of five (5) years of nursing experience with demonstration of progressive clinical competence in a pediatric unit. 
• Expertise in Pediatric nursing with supervisory experience is preferred. 
• Interest-based problem solving and negotiations. 
• Familiarity with the continuous quality improvement process is desirable. 
• Advanced degree in nursing practice.
