Position Overview
The School of Social Work is seeking a dynamic and experienced Web Office Manager & Lead Programmer to lead our talented web team. This is a leadership role perfect for a skilled programmer who is also an adept project manager and strategic thinker.

You will be responsible for the entire lifecycle of our digital ecosystem, ensuring the availability of our critical web applications, websites, and databases. You will also help drive and develop the School's strategy for future web development. Reporting to the Director of Administration, Finance, and Operations, you will supervise a team of two web developers, guiding their work and fostering their professional growth.

A key part of this role involves collaborating with stakeholders across the School, including Marketing and Communications, Academic Programs, and other Business and Administrative Offices. You will manage projects, provide technical support, and translate their needs into robust digital solutions. You will also be at the forefront of innovation, playing a pivotal role in exploring and implementing artificial intelligence to enhance our web applications and services.

Responsibilities*

 

Leadership & Project Management

  • Supervise, mentor, and lead the Web Office team, managing daily operations and removing barriers to success.
  • Manage the full project lifecycle for web application development, from conception and stakeholder consultation to deployment and maintenance.
  • Serve as the primary technical point of contact for the Web Office, effectively communicating timelines, priorities, and progress to internal and external partners.
  • Translate stakeholder needs into technical requirements and actionable development plans.
     

Technical Development & Strategy

  • Serve as the lead programmer for the School, setting the technical direction and contributing to hands-on development.
  • Ensure all web properties adhere to the highest standards of usability and digital accessibility. 
  • Oversee the development and maintenance of faculty and school websites, ensuring they are secure and up-to-date.
  • Champion the exploration and integration of new technologies, including artificial intelligence, to advance the School's strategic goals.
     

Operations & Security

  • Guarantee the continuous operation, performance, and security of all SSW applications, websites, and databases, including SQL and FileMaker solutions.
  • Manage the School's web infrastructure, including domain registration, DNS management, and SSL certificate renewals.
  • Oversee the technical setup and management of live-streamed events and digital signage systems.
  • Act as the School's Security Unit Liaison, ensuring compliance with University of Michigan IT security policies and consulting with faculty on data security agreements.
  • Manage critical data integrations and transfers between the SSW website, web applications, and other information systems.
     

Required Qualifications*

 
  • Proven experience in a senior or lead web development role with strong, hands-on programming skills.
  • Demonstrated experience supervising technical staff and leading development projects.
  • Expertise in project management, including planning, scheduling, and communicating with diverse stakeholders.
  • Strong understanding of web server administration (DNS, SSL, database management, SQL, FileMaker).
  • Deep knowledge of web accessibility standards and usability best practices.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to explain complex technical concepts to non-technical audiences.
  • A proactive and collaborative problem-solver who can manage multiple priorities in a dynamic environment.
  • Bachelor?s degree in Computer Science, a related field, or equivalent experience
  • 5 to 7 years of systems analysis/programming in a business environment
     

Desired Qualifications*

 
  • Experience working in a higher education environment.
  • Familiarity with the University of Michigan's IT ecosystem (e.g., Shibboleth, Cloudflare).
  • A demonstrated interest or experience in applying AI or machine learning to web applications.
