Job Summary

 

The golf course superintendent is responsible for the daily operation, maintenance, and management of the University of Michigan Golf Course, Weisfeld Family Golf Center, and Cilluffo Family Short Game Practice Area. This role focuses on delivering exceptional playing conditions, ensuring facilities support the mission of providing the university community with outstanding and valuable golf experiences.

Responsibilities*

 
  • Manage and plan the maintenance and renovation activities of the University of Michigan Golf Course, Weisfeld Family Golf Center, and Cilluffo Family Short Game Practice Area.
  • Participate in long-range planning meetings for facilities and operations; collaboratively plan future improvements with the GM, Golf Operations Manager, and other key stakeholders.
  • Prepare annual maintenance and capital improvement budgets in alignment with long-range plans and departmental objectives.
  • Approve all expenditures for supplies, equipment, and services; ensure inventory control and effective equipment maintenance programs.
  • Communicate regular updates on facility conditions and maintenance activities with stakeholders.
  • Oversee the scheduling and routing of personnel and equipment; direct daily, weekly, and special project work assignments.
  • Maintain accurate, complete records and administrative documentation including payroll, overtime, weather data, inventory, pesticide applications, maintenance logs, certifications, and compliance reports.
  • Provide leadership and operational guidance in the planning and execution of maintenance, renovation, and improvement projects-applying agronomic and administrative expertise to achieve desired outcomes.
  • Ensure adherence to all safety regulations and protocols; conduct safety training, complete EHS, pesticide, and environmental certifications, and maintain safety inspection schedules.
  • Keep current with golf course industry trends, environmental stewardship programs, and certification standards (such as MTESP, ACSP, GCGS, WCPCS); participate in professional organizations and conferences.
  • Interview, hire, train, supervise, and evaluate both bargained for full-time and seasonal staff; provide coaching and continuous performance feedback as needed. 
  • Maintain consistent availability after hours for emergencies, events, or unplanned needs across assigned facilities.
  • Regularly participate in athletic department, facility, and operational meetings; actively engage in collaborative problem-solving with internal partners.
  • Assure compliance with NCAA and Big Ten Rules as well as OSEH Safety Programs.
  • Assure compliance with University purchasing protocols.

Required Qualifications*

 

Golf Course Senior Superintendent

  • Advanced knowledge of Agronomy and Turfgrass Management practices; a working knowledge of golf facility construction principles, practices and methods.
  • Minimum 10 years of experience at an 18-hole championship golf course with 5 years in supervisory capacity.
  • Turfgrass Management Certificate from an accredited institution.
  • Current state certification or Pesticide applicator license.
  • Experience in construction and renovation, including irrigation design and installation.
  • Experience leading, managing, and evaluating employee performance.
  • Ability to work nights, evenings, and weekends.
     

Golf Course Intermediate Superintendent

  • Advanced knowledge of Agronomy and Turfgrass Management practices; a working knowledge of golf facility construction principles, practices and methods.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience at an 18-hole championship golf course with 1 year in supervisory capacity preferred
  • Enrollment in or completion of a Turfgrass Management Certificate program within 12 months of hire.
  • Ability to obtain state certification or Pesticide applicator license within 6 months of hire.
  • Experience in construction and renovation, including irrigation design and installation.
  • Experience assisting in supervision or training of seasonal or full-time staff preferred.
  • Ability to work nights, evenings, and weekends.

This position may be underfilled at the lower classification depending on the above qualifications of the selected candidate.
