What You'll Do

 

Reporting to the Director of Design/University Architect, you will have the following responsibilities:

Design Management:

  • Evaluate course of action and make independent decisions on matters of significance within the scope of responsibilities, free from immediate direction.
  • Develop program statements and programs for assigned civil capital projects.
  • Evaluate proposals from consultants and participate in the selection process for assigned civil capital projects.
  • Prepare and implement contracts for engaging professional consultant firms to develop and document assigned civil capital projects.
  • Direct the activities of engineers, and other professionals retained for planning, programming and designing assigned civil complex capital projects. Conduct project meetings; responsible for project tracking and analysis.
  • Maintain the highest quality standards in civil engineering, while managing the design process for assigned civil capital projects.
  • Prepare and oversee the preparation of graphics and narrative reports for assigned projects and make presentations of same.

Civil Support of Capital Projects:

  • Coordinate with City on road and utility projects, ROW and permits, and assist AEC with City & MDOT interface; update civil engineer Design Standards, provide historical background on civil construction projects and review legal description. Support City of Ann Arbor civil/site plan submittal and approval process for all projects
  • Understand ADA and PROWAG guidelines. Apply these guidelines to multiple aspects of projects, including pedestrian facilities like sidewalks, curb ramps, crosswalks, and pedestrian signals. They also apply to transportation facilities, such as bus stops and passenger loading zones. Additionally, apply them to site design elements, including accessible routes, slopes/cross slopes, and parking.
  • Advise colleagues, clients, and administrators on matters of civil design and construction.
  • Review civil and campus plans and make recommendations to assure compliance with regulatory agencies and University goals.

Required Qualifications*

 
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience, dependent upon education and previous responsibilities.
  • Registration as professional engineer.
  • A broad knowledge of principles in civil engineering.
  • Minimum of Bachelor's degree from an ABET accredited engineering program.
  • References supporting creativity and out-of-the-box thinking.
