Job Summary

 

Applications are invited for a technician/lab manager to provide technical support for research labs in the Department of Linguistics at the University of Michigan. The department is equipped with EEG, dual electromagnetic articulography (EMA) systems, EGG, ultrasound, oral/nasal airflow measurement system, pupillometry equipment, and eye-tracking equipment. Familiarity with one or more of these laboratory techniques is a plus, although not required. The appointed technician will join a vibrant department conducting research in various areas of linguistics. While not necessary, we hope the candidate will have an interest in linguistic research and will engage in research in many ways.

Responsibilities*

 
  • Manage and support lab hardware/software (EEG, EMA, airflow, ultrasound, eye-tracking, etc.)
  • Assist with experiment setup, software scripting, and data processing pipelines (Python, MATLAB, R)
  • Train and onboard lab users (faculty, students); maintain documentation and equipment logs
  • Support data collection and assist with preliminary analyses for research projects
  • Coordinate research compliance (IRB, data storage) and collaborate with administrative team

Required Qualifications*

 
  • PhD or MA with significant experience in relevant subject areas (linguistics, computational linguistics, cognitive science, computer science, psychology, or related field).
  • Expertise in programming and computational proficiency are required.
  • Specific experience with Python, MATLAB, R, signal processing, machine learning, and time series analyses would be particularly useful but is not a prerequisite; an eagerness to learn and expand knowledge in these areas is expected.
  • Interest in working in an interdisciplinary setting.
     

Desired Qualifications*

 
  • Knowledge of statistics is a plus.
  • Expertise in one or more of the above-mentioned laboratory techniques is a plus.

Additional Information

 

Higher salary possible for exceptionally qualified candidates. This position is funded with a combination of general and grant/research funds with a guaranteed first year of funding entirely from general funds. The departments long-term goal is to make this a permanent position.
