Job Summary

 

The newly established group of Dr. Herman Fung at Cell & Developmental Biology (CDB) and the Life Sciences Institute (LSI) is looking for a Research Lab Tech Senior or Intermediate Laboratory Manager to help set up a lab (https://www.lsi.umich.edu/science/our-labs/herman-fung-lab). Our group uses cutting-edge cryo-EM and cryo-ET methods to explore human structural cell biology with a focus on chromatin and nuclear structures. You will join a dynamic team of technology developers, cell and structural biology experimentalists, assist with research projects, and manage daily laboratory operations. You will contribute toward a welcoming, positive atmosphere in the laboratory. The ideal candidate will have experience in molecular and cell biology, and an openness to acquiring new cryo-EM skillsets.

Responsibilities*

 

Scientific Research

  • Human stem cell maintenance
  • Supporting molecular cloning, gene editing and light microscopy efforts in the laboratory
  • Gaining competence in cryo-ET workflows within the lab, including cryo-FIB milling, cryo-light microscopy and cryo-ET data collection, and supporting lab members once trained

Lab management, training and supervision

  • Onboarding and training of lab members in established protocols of the laboratory
  • Purchasing and management of laboratory equipment and supplies
  • Completing lab documentation and safety inspections
  • Interfacing with lab managers and administrative staff across departments

Required Qualifications*

 

Research Laboratory Technician Senior: A Bachelor's Degree and 1-2 years of experience in molecular biology or related discipline is required.

Research Laboratory Technician Intermediate: A High School Diploma or Associate's degree and 1-3 years experience in molecular biology or a related discipline is required. A Bachelor?s Degree is preferred. 

Other required qualifications include:

  • Independent work ethic and desire to learn and implement new protocols
  • Ability to manage your role in multiple collaborative projects
  • Experience in cell culture and molecular cloning
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

Desired Qualifications*

 

Experience in at least one of the following is preferred, but not required:

  • Experience in CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing and light microscopy
  • Experience in recombinant protein production
  • Experience in single-particle cryo-EM and/or cryo-ET workflows
  • Experience in laboratory management
